Natives of Lee County, Virginia, Jim and his wife, Betty, moved to Wise County in 1966 when Mr. Humphreys joined the faculty as head basketball coach of what was then Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia. He served the College from 1966 to 1977 in several positions including associate professor of education, director of admissions and financial aid, and dean of students before leaving to join his brothers in building the Humphrey's Group. The Jim & Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex, which opened in June 2000, was made possible by the generosity of the Humphreys amd Thomas families.
Friends and family described Jim Humphreys as an enduring competitor and successful business and community leader. He was known as a compassionate, generous, and caring man with a friendly competitive nature. He and his wife, Betty, were lifelong athletes and tennis enthusiasts. Jim left a legacy of extraordinary support for UVa-Wise. Jim was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998 for Outstanding Service and Support.
