Carl Smith was a 1951 graduate from the University of Virginia wth a degree in Economics. He lettered in football during his career at the University of Virginia. Smith grew up in Wise, Virginia attending Greenbrier Military School in West Virginia where he honed his love of football. He would return to Wise to make a career and build a life with his wife, Hunter. He became a leader on the College Board and later served on the University of Virginia's Board of Visitors. He was President of Amvest Corporation among other business interests. He and his wife, Hunter are credited with bringing football to the College at Wise by making a transformational challenge gift which inspired additional gifts needed to fund the program. They also supported general athletics, scholarships, the establishment of the band and provided generous funding for building and renovation projects. Carl W. Smith Stadium, which hosts football and lacrosse games, was named in Carl's honor because of the tremendous support from Carl and Hunter Smith. While Carl is no longer with us, his wife, Hunter, continues to be very active in her support of the College and Athletics Program. He was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998 for Outstanding Service and Support.
