Historic Breakthrough: UVA Wise Claims First SAC Champion, Women Post Program-Best Finish Recap

MEADOWVIEW, VA – The UVA Wise track and field teams concluded the 2025 outdoor season at the South Atlantic Conference Championships, held at Emory & Henry University in Meadowview, Virginia. The women's team delivered a program-defining performance, finishing sixth overall with 55 points -- the highest finish in school history in the SAC -- while the men's team placed 12th with 11.5 points. The meet was highlighted by a milestone achievement for the program, as UVA Wise secured its first-ever South Atlantic Conference individual champion.
 
CHAMPIONSHIP AND ALL-CONFERENCE PERFORMANCES
- Nia Rogers led the headline performance of the meet, capturing the conference title in the hammer throw with a mark of 44.90m (147-03). The victory marks the first SAC championship in program history and earned Rogers First Team All-Conference honors.
- Rogers added to her impact with a Third Team All-Conference finish in the shot put (12.44m), while Lexi Carter delivered a strong double, earning Second Team All-Conference in the shot put (14.02m) and Third Team in the hammer throw (42.09m).
- Braelynn Strouth earned Third Team recognition in the heptathlon (4007 points).
- On the men's side, Bobby Cline secured Third Team All-Conference honors in the hammer throw (53.89m).
 
SCORING PERFORMANCES
- Beyond the all-conference efforts, UVA Wise generated scoring depth across multiple disciplines.
- In the throws, the Cavaliers were particularly effective, with Rogers (1st) and Carter (3rd) in the women's hammer, and Cline (3rd) on the men's side. Carter (2nd) and Rogers (3rd) added key points in the shot put, while Hadaya Abshire contributed with a seventh-place finish in the discus.
- The multi-event and vertical jump groups also produced valuable points. Strouth added a fourth-place finish in the javelin to complement her heptathlon performance, while Raegan Cox placed sixth in the high jump. In the pole vault, Jordyn Taylor (4th), Fairyn Meares (8th), and David Williams (6th) combined for multiple scoring finishes.
- Additional contributions came from Abel Dingus in the javelin (7th) and Avone Noel in the decathlon (8th), highlighting balanced scoring across event groups. The women's 4x100m relay team of Madison Sutherland, Destiny Ansley-Cureton, Madison Outland, and Olivia McClintock added points with a sixth-place finish (48.08).
 
SCHOOL RECORD PERFORMANCES
- The women's 4x100m relay set a new standard (48.08), while the 4x400m relay unit of Jocie Aldrich, Madison Outland, Kylie Brodt, and Haley Faulkner lowered the program mark to 4:10.40.
- Braelynn Strouth's heptathlon total (4007 points) and Avone Noel's decathlon score (4523 points) both set new program records, reflecting continued development in combined events. In distance events, Caleb Ghammashi (10,000m – 36:04.44) and Patton Shortt (3000m steeplechase – 10:13.20) added new benchmarks, while Henry McFarlin set a new mark in the triple jump (13.40m). Bobby Cline's hammer throw performance (53.89m) also stands as a program record.
 
SEASON SUMMARY
The 2025 season represents a clear inflection point for UVA Wise track and field and cross country. The program produced 13 All-Conference performances across cross country, indoor, and outdoor seasons, highlighted by its first conference champion.
Additional milestones included three USTFCCCA All-Academic honorees in cross country and a conference Athlete of the Week selection during the outdoor track and field season.
