WISE – The UVA Wise softball team improved to 11-6 on the season as they swept Saturday's games against Mansfield and Virginia Union.
It is the best start for a Cavalier softball team since the 2018 team started out 14-5.
In the day's other game, Mansfield defeated Lees-McRae 3-1.

GAME ONE
- The Cavs broke the 1-1 tie in the third inning and added two more insurance runs in the sixth to claim the 4-1 win over Mansfield.

Emma McCauley scored in the first inning from third as
Lindsey Polan reached on an error.
- After Mansfield tied it up via a sacrifice fly in the top of the second, the Cavs retook the lead in the next inning as
Riley Nichols was walked with the bases loaded, scoring
Kaylynn Baker.
- That score stood until the bottom of the sixth,
Madison Milne and
Taylor Clay both scored to put the Cavs up 4-1. They then sent the Mounties down in order in the top of the seventh to seal the win.
- Clay had two hits to lead the team, while Polan, Baker, McCauley and
Adyson Gibson each tallied a hit.

Bayleigh Allison went the distance for her fourth win of the season, only allowing the one earned run off of four hits.
GAME TWO
- The Cavs scored four runs in the second inning, one in the third, and five in the fourth inning while only allowing two hits by Panthers.
- Clay and Polan crossed the plate after an
Abagail Mills single was extended by an error in the bottom of the first.
Savannah Johnson and Mills would later score on a pair of groundouts.
- Baker scored in the third and fifth innings, while Gibson, Polan, McCauley, and Clay all scored in the fifth to seal the 10-0 win.
- Baker and Polan had two hits apiece, while Clay, Mills,
Morgan Sutton and
Emmaleigh Banks each had a hit.

Olivia Shockley improved to 1-1 on the season with the complete game. She only allowed two hits and struck out nine batters. The nine strikeouts are the most by a Highland Cavalier since McKenna Falwell struck out 12 Anderson batters in a 3-2 loss to the Trojans on Feb. 24, 2023.

The Cavs will play two games against Virginia Union on Sunday to close out the weekend. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
