WISE – The UVA Wise softball team split a pair of games Friday afternoon to open a big weekend of games on the Bill Gatton Field. They defeated Mansfield 3-0 before falling to Lees-McRae 4-1.
In the day's other game, Lees-McRae defeated Mansfield 12-2 in six innings.
All three teams as well as Virginia Union will be in action on Saturday, followed by a Sunday doubleheader vs. Virginia Union.

GAME ONE
- In the first meeting between the two schools, neither team had a hit until the fourth inning. In the bottom of the inning
Taylor Clay got things going with a leadoff single, followed by another single from
Kaylynn Baker. Clay then scored when
Lindsey Polan reached on an error, followed by an RBI single by
Savannah Johnson that scored baker.
- The Cavs added a run in the fifth when Polan tripled down the left field line and scored Baker from first. Then then held the Mounties to two hits in the seventh to claim the 3-2 win.
- Baker led the team with two hits and two runs, while Clay, Polan and Johnson accounted for the remaining hits.

Alivia Nolley went the distance in the circle for the shutout, allowing only three hits and striking out three batters.
GAME TWO
- Lees-McRae came into the game not having a home game yet due to the damage to the Banner Elk area caused by the remnants of Hurricane Helene. They will not have a home game until March 15.
- The Bobcats picked up all of their runs in the third inning.
- The Cavs would threaten several times down the stretch, but only scored once when
Abagail Mills was walked and eventually scored on an
Adyson Gibson infield single.
- Ellie Hale picked up the win for the Bobcats as she only allowed the one run off of four hits and struck out four.

Madison Milne had two hits for UVA Wise, while
Emma McCauley and Gibson accounted for the other two hits.

Jillian Jones picked up the loss as she allowed five hits and four runs (only three earned) and fanned three Bobcat batters.
