Softball Splits Doubleheader With Cedarville

WISE – The UVA Wise softball team split a pair of games against Cedarville Monday afternoon on the Bill Gatton Softball Field. The Highland Cavaliers won the first game 6-5 and fell to the Yellowjackets in game two by a 9-5 score.

GAME ONE
- Cedarville took a two run lead with scores in the first and second innings.
- The Cavs then scored four runs in the bottom of the second from a RBI single, two hit by pitches with the bases loaded, and a sacrifice fly.
- The Yellowjackets later tied the game at 4-4 with a pair of RBI singles in the fourth inning. They then took the lead via another RBI single in the top of the sixth inning.
- UVA Wise then grabbed the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Kaylynn Baker doubled to the right field wall and scored Emma McCauley and Mataya Ausmus. The defense then shut down Cedarville in the top of the seventh to seal the win.
- Baker had two hits to lead the team, while five other Cavaliers had a hit each. Ausmus scored two of the Cavs' six runs.
- Alivia Nolley went the distance in the circle, giving up five runs (two earned) off of nine hits. She also fanned three hitters.

GAME TWO
- Cedarville took a 4-0 lead with a leadoff solo home run in the first and three more runs in the third inning.
- Lindsey Polan got the Cavs on the board with a three run homer in the fourth that also scored Kaylynn Baker and Adyson Gibson.
- The Yellowjackets added three runs in the fourth inning and another run from a solo home run in the fifth inning to take the 9-3 lead.
- The Cavs attempted a comeback in the seventh inning. Jessica Clark reached base on a single and was then brought in from second base two batters later via another home run from Polan. Cedarville then got the third out and took the 9-5 victory.
- Polan had a big game as she had two runs off of three hits and five RBI from two home runs. Adyson Gibson had two hits and four other Cavs had a hit apiece.

UP NEXT
The Cavs will now have the balance of the week off after Wednesday's matchup against Davis & Elkins was postponed. They will now face Lees-McRae in a doubleheader on Friday.
