INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Result: UVA Wise 3, Concord 0
Records: UVA Wise (8-6); Concord (7-10)
Location: Wise. VA | The Quillen Court in the David J. Prior Convocation Center
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cavs pulled out the 27-25 win in a set that featured 12 ties and six lead changes. Neither team led by more than three points and the teams tied at 23-23 when a bad set by UVA Wise gave the Mountain Lions a set point sideout. A kill by
Mailea Hufnagel off an assist by
Riley Brandon then tied the set again at 24-24. CU the had a kill from Natalie Brown give them the lead once again, and once again Brandon assisted a kill, this time from
Serina Petersen, to tie the set at 25-25.
Piper Suddeth then went to serve for UVA Wise, and after she assisted Brandon on a kill she then gave UVA Wise the 27-25 set win with a service ace.
- The lead see-sawed early in the second set until a Petersen kill sparked a 6-1 Cavalier run. The closest the Mountain Lions would get down the stretch is three points as UVA Wise went on to take the set, 25-20.
- In the past few matches UVA Wise has had slow starts in the third set, but against Concord they were all business as they opened the set on a 7-0 run that featured three service aces by Brandon. They then kept up the pressure and never let CU mount any large runs as they extended the lead out to as much as twelve before Brandon's ninth kill of the match gave UVA Wise the 25-14 set three win and the match victory.
