WISE - - After a valiant comeback effort fell short at Barton, UVA Wise will look to halt a two-game losing streak Saturday when Limestone comes to Carl Smith Stadium for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
UVA Wise is coming off a 28-24 loss where the Cavaliers were stopped inside the five-yard line with less than 10 seconds to play. Meanwhile, Limestone is coming off its first triumph of the year, a 45-14 home win over Carson-Newman.
The Saints' passing attack has been one of the best in the South Atlantic Conference in the early going. Senior quarterback Dustin Noller has passed for 596 yards and five touchdowns while having yet to throw an interception. Noller's two favorite targets have been Jelani Baker and Drew Dixon. Baker has caught 15 passes for 195 yards and a trio of scores while Dixon has hauled in 13 catches for 179 yards and a touchdown to pace the league's leading offense at 465 yards per game.
UVA Wise is fresh off its best rushing performance against a SAC school since joining the league. At Barton, Dane Damron's squad racked up 250 yards on the ground, 125 came from senior Jaevon Gillespie who posted the sixth 100-yard rushing game of his career. It was an efficient rushing day for the Cavaliers who saw Shyhiem Pannell gain 66 yards and Zavier Lomax tack on 40 more along with his first UVA Wise touchdown.
Through the air, Jake Corkren completed 16-of-26 passes for 190 yards and a score while the signal caller added 14 yards on the ground. Possibly most impressive was the play of the offensive line. The unit did not allow a sack in addition to paving the way for the big rushing performance.
Limestone is under the direction of Head Coach Mike Furrey who like UVA Wise Head Coach Dane Damron spent time coaching Kentucky Christian. An eight-year NFL veteran as a wide receiver, Furrey is joined on his staff by another former NFL wide receiver in Jerricho Cotchery.
The Cavs will be on the road next week to face nationally ranked Lenoir-Rhyne while the Saints return home to face Mars Hill.
