FALWELL REACHES 400 STRIKEOUTS, CAVS FALL TO TORNADO

WISE — On a day where McKenna Falwell surpassed the 400-career strikeout marker, it was the visiting King Tornado that would seal the deal in a doubleheader sweep - each by five runs. King secured the 5-0 shutout win in game one while taking an 8-3 win in game two.

In game one, UVA Wise (8-28) offensive standout Kara Long went two-for-three followed by teammates Sarah Barrett, McKenna Falwell, and Bayleigh Allison who each posted a hit each.

King (24-17) would hold a solid 2-0 lead until UVA Wise threatened to capitalize on a leadoff walk drawn by Barrett. A Long and Falwell single each to follow would load the bases before reliever Madison Walter would strike out the next three Cavaliers to escape further damage.

At the top of the seventh, a three-run, three hit frame from the Tornado would push their lead — a Cavalier error would push one run home while Lawson drove a homer to centerfield to score two, finalizing the 5-0 score.

Falwell would take the loss in the circle, but secured nine strikeouts to total her career strikeout count to 404 - good for a third place ranking in school history.

In game two, UVA Wise would be the first to attack in the bottom of the first after a Falwell RBI double. The Cavaliers would also take charge in the bottom of the second after King pitcher Nikole Counts walked in a run to give the home squad a 2-0 lead.

The Tornado wasted little time to respond as Jessica Campbell smashed a homer to make things even at 2-2. Despite getting out of the inning, the Tornado capitalized further in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

UVA Wise added another run to the board after Falwell pushed an RBI single to the right side, but their rally would come to an end after a fielder's choice and two groundouts to finish the game with an 8-3 Tornado triumph.

Falwell led on the offensive side for the Cavaliers in game two, going two-for-three with three RBI and including a double. Abagail Mills, Mallory McKnight, Long and Barrett all added a hit each to the stat line.

Campbell led King with three hits and two RBI. In the circle, Counts took the win with three strikeouts and allowed six hits.

Up next, UVA Wise will head back home to face Catawba on Saturday, April 15 with a 2:00 PM start.
