WISE — On a celebratory day honoring seniors Megan Wilson, Hayley Duckett, McKenna Falwell and Kara Long, UVA Wise smashed a six-game losing streak with a game one win over Catawba by a score of 8-1 before falling to the visitors in the night cap by a score of 8-3 on Saturday, April 15.
The Cavaliers (9-29, 4-16 SAC) found an early lead in the bottom of the first inning as Kara Long smacked an RBI double to get a 1-0 advantage.
Catawba (24-16, 12-10 SAC) evened the score in the top of the second when Molly Strider hit the ground running with a homer to lead things off. Catawba grabbed two more hits in the frame before the Cavaliers escaped further damage.
Both squads would struggle to find a run until the bottom of the fourth when Emma McCauley poked an two-run dinger to centerfield to grab 3-1 lead.
Catawba pitching would struggle to find an out — and the Cavaliers would further capitalize. In the bottom of the sixth, UVA Wise used a Brie Frazier RBI-double followed by a Sarah Barrett two-run knock to swipe a 6-1 lead. Three batters later, Mallory McKnight would join scoring with a two-run homer of her own to solidify the final 8-1 score.
Catawba found an offensive rhythm in game two, jumping to a 2-0 lead by a Briana Gallagher two-run double. The Indians added to the scoreboard in the top of the third with an RBI single to score another two runs to hold a 4-0 margin.
UVA Wise found their first run in the bottom of the third after McKnight singled to left field, scoring a run.
UVA Wise wouldn't score again until the bottom of the fifth as a Catawba passed ball allowed Long to score.
Catawba kept pushing runs home, finding themselves up by a score of 8-2 in the bottom of the sixth.
In their last-chance at-bat, Long led off with a homer to right center to cut the deficit to five, but wouldn't add further as the Indians took game two 8-3.
Bayleigh Allison smacked four hits on the day, going three-for-four in game one. Long added three hits with two RBI while McKnight tallied three hits and three RBI.
Falwell snagged a win in her last appearance in the circle at Cavalier Field, swiping five strikeouts in seven innings pitched in the opener.
Up next, UVA Wise heads to Greenville, Tenn. to face the Pioneers of Tusculum on Tuesday, April 18 with a 1:00 PM start.
