WISE — UVA Wise secured their third conference win of the season in game one of their doubleheader against Limestone, snagging a 2-1 triumph before falling to the Saints 10-4 in the night cap on Saturday, March 26 at Cavalier Field.
In the low-scoring affair, Kara Long made the first long-ball move for the Cavaliers (6-22, 3-13 SAC) with a dinger to centerfield in the first inning to put her squad up 1-0.
Limestone (16-14, 7-5 SAC) didn't let UVA Wise hold the lead for long as Madison Chappell drove a homer of her own to center, evening the score at 1-1 before McKenna Falwell forced a strikeout, a groundout, and a lineup from the Cavalier pitching circle to retire the side.
Until the fifth inning, UVA Wise and Limestone each couldn't put up a solid at-bat. In the bottom of the fifth, the Cavaliers put a runner in scoring position (Hayley Duckett) after a Limestone error. After Caroline Ruth forced two groundouts for the Saints to give them a two-out advantage, Brie Frazier came up big with an RBI single to shortstop to take the 2-1 edge. The Cavaliers would hold off the Saints and take the 2-1 win with the help of five Falwell strikeouts.
The Cavaliers were only held to three hits — from Long, Frazier, and Hannah Richardson. The Saints were also held to three hits in game one from Chappell, Faith Calloway, and Abigail Price.
In game two, Limestone put together 10 runs from 17 hits to hold off the Cavaliers. Despite a sacrifice fly RBI from Mallory McKnight in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1, Limestone would find a 2-1 lead in the top of the second and never look back.
After keeping Cavalier bats at bay in the bottom of the second, the Saints had climbed their way to a 5-1 lead in the top of the third after an RBI single from Calloway and a Chappell two-run homer.
Bayleigh Allison would grab her second career home run to pace the Cavaliers in the bottom of the forth, pushing them within two runs of the Saints.
Even with the Cavalier momentum, Ruth would soon push her Limestone squad to a 8-3 lead in the top of the fifth after a three-run single. Limestone's six-hit affair would give them a 9-3 lead before the Cavaliers would get their bats back.
UVA Wise wouldn't find another opportunity to score again until the bottom of the seventh, but their rally would be too late and the Saints would come up with a final 10-4 win.
UVA Wise collected eight total hits in game two, with Long leading the way with three. Frazier followed right behind with two of her own as well as McKnight (1), Allison (1), and Duckett (1).
Up next, UVA Wise faces non-conference Bluefield State at Cavalier Field on Wednesday, March 29 for 3:00 & 5:00 PM starts.
