WISE — The Cavaliers held the Big Blue to only one run in their non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 29, taking game one by a 7-1 score and game two by a mercy-rule 10-0 score at Cavalier Field.
Game one was highlighted by a 10-strikeout performance from McKenna Falwell - her third double-digit strikeout performance of the year from the circle.
Offensively, Sarah Barrett smacked her sixth home run of the year in the first inning after an RBI double from Bluefield State's (4-21) Lexi Shadowens secured the squad's only score of the day.
UVA Wise (8-22) would find their way home in the next three innings — including a three-run fifth inning from a Hannah Richardson RBI double and a Bayleigh Allison two-run single.
The Big Blue would only find six hits against the Cavaliers with two coming from Valeria Rivera.
In game two, Alivia Nolley pitched her most impressive game of the season as the sophomore struck out seven — a career-high.
Cavalier bats came alive in the third inning at just the right time. Bluefield State pitching faltered with three walks early in the inning before Falwell demolished a grand slam to left center to give her squad a 5-0 advantage. Mallory McKnight joined in on long-ball scoring as she poked her own homer to centerfield to add to the damage. Before Bluefield State could get out of the rut, UVA Wise had secured a 7-0 lead.
A three-run, four-hit fourth inning from the hit-hungry Cavaliers would catapult their lead to 10, giving the Big Blue no where to turn. A strikeout and two groundouts over the visitor would complete the Cavalier run rule.
Falwell went 1-for-3 and finished with four RBIs while Brie Frazier went 2-for-2 at the plate. Falwell's grand slam would give her four RBIs to lead the Cavaliers.
Nolley only allowed four hits in the circle, securing her third win.
Up next, UVA Wise heads back into conference play against Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory, N.C. on April 1 for 2/4 PM starts.
