WISE - The Eagles pieced together two substantial big-hit innings in each game of the twin bill today, taking two five-inning wins over the Cavaliers in 14-4 and 11-0 fashion on Thursday, March 16.
The No. 24 Carson-Newman squad (23-5, 8-3 SAC) chugged out 14 hits in game one, securing seven runs in the fourth inning with a rally sparked by a Cavalier error.
UVA Wise (4-18, 2-10 SAC) put up a run in the top of the first to get on the board early with a Falwell RBI single to third. Their efforts would be thwarted until the third inning when Falwell would smack another RBI — this time, a double into left field — to keep the Cavaliers trucking. Mallory McKnight would then swing into her first home run of the year to center field, scoring another two to put the score at 7-4.
In the fourth, the Eagles would score seven runs on five hits while the Cavaliers would struggle with five fielding miscues to put their lead at a 10-run margin.
Rylee Gattis in the circle for the Eagles would finish the bottom of the fourth allowing one hit and holding two Cavaliers on base.
Falwell would finish game one with three strikeouts in four innings pitched while Hannah Richardson would come in for one inning and allow one hit.
In the night cap, the Cavaliers would be held to only four hits and suffer their second scoreless game of the season against an 18-hit performance from the visitors.
Sarah Barrett would lead the way in game two going two-for-three with a single and a triple (her second of the year). Emma McCauley and Megan Wilson would join her with a hit each.
Alivia Nolley finished in the circle with three strikeouts in four and 1/3 innings pitched while Richardson made another pitching appearance and for two outs in the top of the fifth.
