EMORY, VA. — Second-inning bats in both games of the day gave Emory & Henry the doubleheader sweep over UVA Wise at Wasps Field on Saturday, March 18.
UVA Wise (4-20, 2-12 SAC) were held to only three hits on the day, stemming from game two.
In game one, Avery Adkins pushed the Wasps (13-10, 8-4 SAC) up to a 3-0 lead with a three-run homer to left center.
The Wasps jumped to a 9-0 lead after securing a six-run, three hit second inning. Emory & Henry scored their final run in the fourth after a sacrifice fly from Kate Ingo brought in a Wasp home.
In game two, Sarah Barrett, Mallory McKnight, and Bayleigh Allison got their bats going for the Cavaliers but wouldn't be able to bring a run in. The Wasps collected 12 hits, with six of them coming from the second inning.
In the inning, Emory & Henry added another three-run homer — but this time, from Ingo. A Cavalier fielding miscue and five more hits for the Wasps gave their squad a 7-0 edge going into the third.
Despite all three hits for the Cavaliers coming from the third, the rally was thwarted by a double play to retire their side.
Emory & Henry snagged their last three runs in the fourth with two RBI singles and a UVA Wise error. In their last at-bat, Adkins in the circle for the Wasps drew a groundout, a strikeout, and a flyout to take the 10-0 win.
Up next, UVA Wise will face West Virginia State University at Cavalier Field on Tuesday, March 21 in the first two games of an eight-game homestand.
