EMMANUEL, GA. — UVA Wise fell short in their non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 25 — falling 13-5 in game one and 2-1 in game two.
GAME 1
Emmanuel used an 11-hit effort to score 13 runs in their six-inning victory over UVA Wise on Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first inning, Emma McCauley led the Cavaliers (2-10, 0-2 SAC) with an RBI single in the second inning to give her team the 1-0 lead.
Ellee Varner led the Lions (5-7, 0-0 CC) with a four-hit game — with her first hit in the second inning to get the Lions on the scoreboard and tie things up at one run each. Emmanuel would then find some wiggle room after an RBI single, a wild pitch and a walk would put the Lions ahead 4-1 before a groundout would retire the side.
Despite two rallies led by McKenna Falwell and Kara Long in the top of the fifth and sixth innings to give the Cavaliers five runs, the Lions would remain in the driver's seat for the rest of the ballgame. In the bottom of the fourth, Emmanuel quickly jumped up to an 8-1 lead with the aid of a Jennifer Gibson homer. The bottom of the sixth saw a similar offensive charge from the Lions as the three-hit, four run inning would seal the mercy rule 13-5 win.
GAME 2
The second game of the twin bill saw a tight battle of the bats as each team went scoreless until the top of the third when Long roped an RBI double. UVA Wise held off the Lions until the bottom of the fourth inning — when back-to-back singles, a Cavalier miscue, and a two-run single pushed their squad up 2-1.
After Emmanuel took the lead, the Cavaliers could never recover. Maddie Edwards would produce 10 Ks and hold UVA Wise to only two hits after the fourth.
Long would lead UVA Wise with a total four hits on the day. Falwell would trail right behind with three knocks.
In the circle, Falwell would swipe a strikeout in game one while Hannah Richardson would put up two strikeouts in two innings pitched in her hurling debut.
In game two, Alivia Nolley would get a strikeout and allow seven hits in six innings pitched.
Up next, UVA Wise jumps back into conference play as they face No. 18 Lincoln Memorial on Friday, March 3 with 1/3 PM start times.
