WISE - - UVA Wise Assistant Head Football Coach Mike Compton will be inducted into the Virginia High School League Hall of Fame on Feb. 6. The Richlands native was a standout lineman in high school before later having a successful collegiate career at West Virginia University and winning two Super Bowls with the New England Patriots in the NFL.
A 1988 graduate of Richlands High School, Compton aided the high school to its first playoff appearance in 15 years as a senior. Following high school, the offensive lineman had a standout collegiate career for the Mountaineers where he was a consensus All-American in 1992; during his career Compton was also an Academic All-American. In 2005, his on field and off field success for the university was recognized as he was inducted to the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame.
Selected in the third round of the NFL Draft in 1993, Compton played with the Detroit Lions from 1993-2000 before spending 2001-2003 with the Patriots. He wrapped up his career in 2004 with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Compton recently completed his sixth season working at UVA Wise where he serves as the program's offensive line coach in addition to his duties as assistant head coach.
The induction ceremony will take place at the DoubleTree Hotel in Charlottesville.
