WISE - - Both visiting Barton and UVA Wise will have plenty to play for Saturday when the Bulldogs visit Smith Stadium in a 12 p.m. kickoff.
In just its second year of existence, Barton could claim a winning season as Chip Hester's squad enters with a 5-5 record. Likewise, Dane Damron's Cavaliers could claim a winning season; UVA Wise is 5-5 and a win would provide the program with its first winning season since 2016.
Fans of "old school" football may get a thrill in this one. Barton running back Jordan Terrell is the nation's second-leading rusher at 1,547 yards. The redshirt freshman has also scored 13 touchdowns on the ground this season. As the season has progressed, the UVA Wise defense has gotten much better at stopping the run. A week ago, Catawba finished with negative one-yard rushing as UVA Wise claimed a 30-7 triumph.
Terrell has gained at least 100 yards rushing in all but one game this season. Terrell's high-water mark came in a win over Limestone when he gained 256 yards on 24 carries. The 5-foot-10 back has shown his durability as well. Earlier this year, he ran the ball 39 times in a win over Carson-Newman.
The defensive front for the Cavs has been a big reason for the improvement in rush defense. Last week, defensive lineman Chavon Fields recorded five solo tackles, three of which were sacks and four of which came behind the line of scrimmage. The Richmond native highlighted his day with a strip sack where he also recovered the fumble en route to SAC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Fellow defensive lineman tied Fields for team-high tackles honors with five and enters the regular season finale as the team's leading tackler this season with 55 tackles. Burgess (5.5) and Fields (5.0) have combined for 10.5 sacks this season.
Senior UVA Wise wide receiver could make some history in his final collegiate game. The Baltimore product is second in the South Atlantic Conference in receiving yards at 751, just four yards shy of the current league leader. If Heckstall can finish the season as the league leader, he would become the first Cav to do so since joining the SAC.
A win would also allow UVA Wise to finish the season on a three-game winning streak. The program has not won three consecutive games since winning four consecutive games in 2016. Additionally, the Cavs could secure their fourth win of the season at Smith Stadium. The number would be the most for the program since 2011; thus, marking the most home wins since joining NCAA Division II.
Prior to the game, 16 seniors will be honored for their contribution to the football program at UVA Wise.
