WISE - - Sunday's Mountain East Conference baseball doubleheader between UVa-Wise and visiting West Virginia Wesleyan did not lack for excitement as the host Cavaliers claimed a pair of one-run, extra-inning victories to complete a four-game sweep of the Bobcats. Hank Banner's club won the opener on an error 5-4 in the eighth inning before junior shortstop Jordon Turner's single down the right field line plated senior David Thomas to give the team a 10-9 win in eight innings in the finale.
UVa-Wise (25-21, 19-9 MEC) has now won seven league games by a run and needs to split its final four MEC games to guarantee a trip to the league tournament in Beckley, W.Va. in two weeks.
The opener saw West Virginia Wesleyan (15-32, 9-19) score first when Ryan Kiser grounded into a double play allowing Nick Grotti to score in the top of the second.
The Cavs quickly took the lead as a two-out two-run single off the bat of Bret Roberts gave his club a 2-1 lead after two innings of action.
A back-and-forth affair, the Bobcats regained the lead in the top of the third on a two-run homer by Alex Skinner.
The score would remain unchanged until the home fifth when junior Tristan Peccerelli blasted a two-run home run over the right centerfield wall to give UVa-Wise a 4-3 advantage.
The Cavs would be unable to hold the lead as an error allowed Eric Forbick to scamper home with the tying run in the sixth.
Despite tying the game it would be a missed opportunity for the visitors as UVa-Wise reliever Nate Thompson would induce back-to-back ground outs to keep the go-ahead run stranded at second.
The Cavs loaded the bases in the sixth with one out but, Wesleyan reliever Jake Hakey would strikeout consecutive hitters to keep the game tied.
Both Thompson and Hakey would work perfect seventh innings to send the game to extra innings.
The Bobcats would get a one out single from Forbick in the top of the eighth and after Thompson struck out Antonio Vega, Forbick would attempt to steal second only to over slide the bag and be out on the play.
In the home half of the inning, UVa-Wise loaded the bases with nobody out but, it appeared as if Hakey may once more work out of trouble as a fielder's choice ground out cut down the winning run at the plate while keeping a double play in order.
Tyler Blaum then stepped to the plate and hit a sharp ground ball at the third baseman for a potential inning ending double play; however, the throw would sail over catcher Domonic Castello's head allowing Turner to come home with the game-winning run.
Thompson earned the mound win as he fanned four in 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. The junior surrendered just one hit and did not walk a batter.
Peccerelli finished the game 2-for-4 as the only Cav to have a multi-hit game as part of a nine-hit effort for the hosts.
Game two saw UVa-Wise overcome five defensive errors to complete the sweep.
As was the case in game one, the Bobcats took an early lead. This time, the visitors scored in the top of the first on a ground ball double play and a run-scoring infield single by Nick Grotti.
Once more, the Cavs quickly responded as an RBI ground out by Peccerelli, a passed ball allowing Blaum to score and run-scoring single by Matthew Branham made it a 3-2 contest after an inning.
In the second, a two-run, two-out double by David Thomas gave UVa-Wise a 5-2 lead but, Wesleyan responded and scored four times on three errors in the third to go back in front 6-5.
A two-RBI double by Brett Yates and a sacrifice fly by Blaum in the fourth gave the lead back to the hosts at 7-6.
Branham made it a 9-6 game with a two-out run-scoring double in the sixth only to see the lead slip away in the top of the seventh.
Forbick led off the frame with a solo homer to cut the deficit to two before a two-base error and a run-scoring hit by Ben Fulks made it a 9-8 score. The Bobcats would tie the game on a passed ball but, left fielder turned relief pitcher Ethan Fletcher would strand two men in scoring position to keep the game tied.
Fletcher would lead off the home seventh with a single but would be stranded at second base, forcing extra innings for the second consecutive game.
The hurler would strikeout Wesleyan's number two, three and four hitters to send the game to the home eighth.
After the first two batters reached in the inning, Castello would retire two consecutive hitters sending Turner to the plate.
The shortstop lined the first pitch he saw down the right field line allowing Thomas to come home with the winning run.
Fletcher struck out four against one walk while not allowing a hit in two innings of work. The mound win was the first of his UVa-Wise career.
At the plate, six Cavs had a multi-hit game. Fletcher led the way by going 3-for-4 while Blaum had two hits, scored three runs and knocked in a run. Yates went 2-for-5 with two RBI while Branham knocked in two as part of a 2-for-4 day, Bret Roberts went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Turner finished 2-for-5, including the game-winning hit.
Grotti was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI in the loss while Forbick and leadoff hitter Greg Smith also had two hits.
By dropping two one-run games, Wesleyan has now lost nine such games this season.
UVa-Wise will wrap up regular season play next weekend with a four-game series against Concord University. The series begins Friday in Athens, W.Va. with a doubleheader before shifting to Wise Sunday.
