Cavs Drop DH at Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. - - The Concord University Mountain Lions used two strong starts on the mound and flawless defense to sweep a doubleheader from the UVa-Wise Cavaliers on Friday afternoon by scores of 8-0 and 6-1 at Anderson Field on the Campus of Concord University. The sweep ties the Mountain Lions and Cavaliers in the Mountain East Conference South Division standings.

Behind a complete game shutout performance from Junior Will Guay, the Mountain Lions took game one by a score of 8-0. Concord got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jordan Clark, scoring Anthony Stehlin, which would prove to be enough. Concord added three runs in the third inning, a single run in the fourth inning, and three more in the sixth inning. UVa-Wise starter, Greg Duncan suffered the loss for the Cavaliers, allowing four earned runs on nine hits over three innings of work. Guay, scattered just three singles over his complete game effort.

Game two was much the same story for the Cavaliers. After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning behind a Dave Thomas RBI double scoring Bret Roberts, Concord answered with a two-run homerun by Evan Webb, scoring two, and the Mountain Lions would never look back. Concord tagged UVa-Wise starter Landon Faulkner for two runs in each of the first three innings. Faulkner suffered the loss for the Cavaliers allowing six runs, four earned, on nine Mountain Lion hits. Concord starter Troy Beckner settled in after the first inning to earn the win, allowing just one run on seven Cavalier hits through 6 2/3 innings. Concord reliever Adam Linkous recorded the final out to finish the game for Concord.

With the sweep, Concord moves in to a tie with UVa-Wise for second place in the Mountain East Conference South Division. Both teams lead West Virginia State by two games for the final spot in the Mountain East Conference Tournament. West Virginia State has four remaining games against MEC-South leader Charleston beginning with a doubleheader Friday night at Charleston.

After a day off Saturday, Concord and UVa-Wise will complete the series on Sunday, with a pivotal doubleheader at Stallard Field on the campus of The University of Virginia's College at Wise. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
