Baseball Drops DH at Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - - In a meeting between the Mountain East Conference North Division leader Shepherd and South Division leader UVa-Wise, it was the host Rams of Shepherd that scored a doubleheader sweep. Shepherd scored a 9-3 win in the opener before claiming a 6-4 win in the finale.

Shepherd (19-9, 10-2 MEC) used a six-run home first en route to the 9-3 win the opener.

Syeed Mahdi had a three-run homer for the Rams while Justin Smith hit a two-run blast in the win.

UVa-Wise (14-15, 8-4 MEC) received a two-run homer from senior David Thomas, his first of the season and a solo blast by sophomore Ethan Fletcher to account for its three runs.

Shepherd lined 12 hits in the win while Steve Bowley earned the mound win by scattering five hits and striking out five in a complete game effort.

Game two saw the Cavaliers bolt out to a three run lead after two innings of play as Brett Yates had an RBI groundout and Bret Roberts picked up a run-scoring infield single; the third run came when Jordon Turner came home on a wild pitch.

The score would remain unchanged until the home third when Brenton Doyle lined a solo homer and Mahdi picked up an RBI single to make it a 3-2 game.

UVa-Wise pushed its lead back to two in the fourth when Cal Bailey came home on a wild pitch only to see a four-run fifth inning propel the Rams to the win.

In the big inning, VCU transfer Nick Atkinson belted a two-run homer while Daniel Keer and Doyle also had an RBI.

The Cavs outhit the Rams 12-to-9 in the game but stranded nine base runners. Roberts led the way with three hits while Matthew Branham and Turner had two each.

Next up, UVa-Wise will begin MEC South Division play at Glenville State. The four-game series is scheduled to start Saturday in Glenville, W.Va.
