GLENVILLE, W.Va. - - Greg Duncan pitched a complete game five-hitter to lead UVa-Wise to a 5-1 win in game one before Tristan Peccerelli's two-run double in the seventh inning of game two completed a comeback as the Cavaliers upended Glenville State 6-4 to post a Mountain East Conference sweep at the Morris Sports Complex Saturday.
UVa-Wise (16-15, 10-4 MEC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game when the visitors took advantage of a pair of Glenville State (8-21, 4-10 MEC) errors.
The Pioneers tied the game in the home half of the inning when Logan Henderson's RBI infield single allowed Tyler Phillips to scamper home.
UVa-Wise took the lead for good in the top of the third inning when back-to-back hits by Tyler Blaum and Brett Yates put runners on second and third. David Thomas would score Blaum on an RBI groundout.
It would be all the run support Duncan would need. The junior would retire 12 consecutive Glenville State hitters during one stretch and only faced trouble again in the sixth inning.
With his team holding a 2-1 lead, Duncan faced a man on second with one out. After Josh Smith struck out, Logan Henderson hit what appeared to be a game-tying single. UVa-Wise shortstop Jordon Turner made a diving stop in the hole, while Henderson reached it prevented the game-tying run from scoring.
A hitter later, Duncan struck out Chris Swain to end the threat. It was one of a career-high 10 punch outs for the Centreville, Va. product.
In the seventh, the Cavs put the game out of reach as Ethan Fletcher belted a solo homerun and Bret Roberts and Blaum lined RBI hits to make it a 5-1 game
Duncan returned to the mound to retire the Pioneers in order to improve to 5-1 on the year.
Blaum finished 3-for-4 to lead a nine hit effort while Yates and Fletcher added two hits each.
Glenville State raced out to a 4-1 lead after three innings of play in game two. The Pioneers received a two-run homer by Tre'von Smith and a two-run single by Henderson while the Cavs had a run scoring double off the bat of Yates.
UVa-Wise tied the game with a three-run fifth inning thanks to a run-scoring double by Blaum, an RBI groundout by Yates and a sacrifice fly by David Thomas.
In the seventh, Peccerelli lined a two-run double to provide the winning margin.
Landon Faulkner struck out eight over five innings of work before giving way to Nate Thompson who pitched two innings of perfect relief to earn the mound win (2-2).
Peccerelli finished the game 3-for-4, Blaum was 3-for-3 as he finished the day 6-for-7.
On the day, UVa-Wise hurlers fanned 19 hitters against five walks.
