Football Travels to Newberry Saturday

WISE - - UVa-Wise will attempt to halt a four-game losing streak and wrap up a three-game road trip with a win Saturday when Dane Damron's Cavaliers visit Newberry for a South Atlantic Conference gridiron battle slated for a 4 p.m. kickoff.

Both teams enter with identical 1-4 records and are looking to "right the ship" at the season's midway point. Newberry has made a change at quarterback, turning the reigns over to freshman Colton Bailey. A week ago, Bailey completed 10-of-25 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns while adding 49 yards on the ground. The 5-foot-9 Bailey does have a three touchdown game to his credit when he came off the bench to fire a trio of scoring passes in Newberry's 30-20 win over Tusculum earlier this month.

Forcing turnovers has been the strong suit for coach Todd Knight's Wolves. Five different players have already recorded an interception as Newberry enters the game as the SAC leader in turnover margin per game at +1.4 while ranking 14th in NCAA Division II. After not forcing a turnover in its season opening loss to North Greenville, Newberry has forced multiple turnovers in four consecutive games, including three last week when the team dropped a 20-19 decision to Mars Hill.  The defense also has one the league's top rushers in Keito Jordon. The 6-foot-2, 245-pound senior has earned First-Team All-SAC honors during his career and is currently second in the league and 17th nationally with five sacks this season.

For UVa-Wise, generating offense is a must if the team is to stop the losing streak. The Cavaliers averaging just over 10 points per game during the streak while having turned the ball over 13 times over the same time period. Tight end Seth Phillips has become a favorite target of UVa-Wise quarterbacks. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound sophomore leads the team with 12 receptions and two touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Cavs have had difficulty stopping the run. Two weeks ago, Carson-Newman rushed for 464 yards before Lenoir-Rhyne gained 356 yards on the ground last week. The defense has fared well against the pass, limiting four of the first five opponents to under 200 passing yards. Redshirt junior Marcus Tarrer leads the team and is second in the SAC in tackles with 43. A week ago, the defensive back registered a season-high 12 tackles marking the fourth time this season Tarrer has tallied at least eight stops.

Knight has been at the helm of the Newberry program for 11 seasons having produced three playoff appearances, four NFL players and a conference title in 2016. That same season, Knight was named SAC Coach of the Year by his peers, he ranks ninth all-time in SAC coaching victories.

In his fourth season at UVa-Wise, Damron has taken a program that won just five total games combined in the three previous seasons to his arrival to a team that has won at least four games in each of his first three seasons. The coach also produced the school's only winning record as a NCAA Division II member when UVa-Wise went 6-5 in 2016.

This will be the first meeting between UVa-Wise and Newberry in football. The Wolves have been playing football since 1913 while the Cavs began their program in 1991.

Next week, UVa-Wise will host Tusculum University in 1 p.m. kickoff while Newberry hits the road to challenge Catawba University at 12 p.m.
