Cavalier Football Aims for Back-to-Back Wins Saturday

WISE - - Two teams coming off a win meet Saturday when West Virginia Wesleyan (1-5, 1-4 MEC) tangles with UVa-Wise (2-4, 2-4 MEC) inside Smith Stadium. The Bobcats upset Charleston last week 27-26 while Dane Damron's Cavaliers upended Urbana 17-0.

West Virginia Wesleyan signal caller Luke Casey has been the key for the Bobcats this fall and last week the redshirt senior had his best game of the season as he passed for three touchdowns and ran for one more in his team's win. On the season, Casey ranks second in the MEC in passing yards per game at 258.8 while completing 57.6 percent of his attempts.

UVa-Wise held Urbana to 39 passing yards last week as part of the 12th shutout in school history. On the season, the Cavs lead the league in pass defense holding opponents to 143.4 yards per game. A year ago, UVa-Wise limited Casey to 14-of-27 passing for 146 yards while picking off the quarterback once in a 10-7 loss in Buckhannon, W.Va.

On offense, UVa-Wise has been using its young receivers to provide some offense. Two weeks ago, Alonzo Brown caught the first touchdown pass of his collegiate career before Rob Jones' 20-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter at Urbana provided him his first collegiate score. For the year, UVa-Wise signal callers have completed passes to 14 different receivers.

Trevor Owens is coming off one of the best punting games of his career. The Lebanon, Va. native averaged 40.4 yards per punt and boomed an 81-yard punt to establish a new MEC record. This year, Owens is averaging 39.1 yards per punt while having 11 punts downed inside the 20 with five punts going greater than 50 yards. Owens also added a 34-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter to seal last week's win.

Special teams could play a role in deciding Saturday's winner. West Virginia Wesleyan ranks last in the league in net punting at 24.2 yards per punt. A similar result against UVa-Wise could provide the Cavs with a short field to play off. A week ago, Urbana punted 10 times as part of a day that saw the Blue Knights go 3-and-out seven times out of 15 possessions.

Bobcats' freshman Jujuan Linzy could also pose the Cavs problems in the return game. Thus far, Linzy is averaging 19.8 yards per return with a long of 52 yards. Also a receiver, Linzy has caught 29 passes for 323 yards, his 753 all-purpose yards leads the team and ranks fourth in the conference.

A win would give UVa-Wise back-to-back wins for the first time since starting last season 2-0 while also giving the school its first ever win over West Virginia Wesleyan. Next week, UVa-Wise will hit the road to face the University of Charleston before enjoying its first bye week since the 2002 season.
