WISE - - Junior outside hitter Ciara Kain and junior linebacker Donavan Montague have been named Cavaliers of the Month for the month of September. Kain led the UVa-Wise volleyball team with 176 kills while adding 148 digs in 15 matches during the month en route to her first Cavalier of the Month honor. Montague led the football team with 7.5 tackles for loss and five sacks through the season's first five games to earn his first Cavalier of the Month award.
Kain recorded four double-doubles in September as she posted a team-high 27 kills and 22 digs in the Cavs home opener win against Milligan College. The Leesburg, Va. (Loudon County H.S.) native helped lead the team to its first road sweep of the season against Bluefield State College behind 17 kills and a .405 attack percentage
The outside hitter also had a strong performance in the Cavs conference opener against Glenville State College as she tallied 13 kills and 15 digs in the home contest. Kain's efforts have placed her in the top-10 in kills and points in the Mountain East Conference.
Montague highlighted his month by earning Mountain East Conference Defensive Player of the Week accolades. The 6-foot-3, 218 pound native of Altavista, Va. (Altavista H.S.) picked off a pair of passes, including a pick-6 while adding a fumble recovery in the Cavs' 34-24 win over West Virginia State.
The junior followed the performance up with back-to-back games with a pair of sacks before finishing the month with four tackles, including a tackle for loss against Fairmont State. With two interceptions, Montague is tied for fourth in the MEC in the category while his five sacks have him fourth in the league as well.
