Wofford College Handles UVa-Wise in Exhibition Tuesday Night

Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UVa-Wise men's basketball team was handed a 116-56 defeat Tuesday night in an exhibition game at NCAA Division I Wofford College's Benjamin Jonson Arena. The Terriers (3-6) torched the nets for 40 minutes and made 70.3 percent (45-of-64) of their shots, the highest field goal percentage of any Division I team this season. Wofford astoundingly hit 15-of-22 3-point attempts (68.2 percent) and held the Cavaliers (1-7) to just 32.8 percent (20-of-61) shooting for the night.
 
After a 3-pointer by redshirt sophomore forward Dimitri Sousa (São Paulo, Brazil) thirty seconds into the game that gave UVa-Wise an early 3-2 lead, the Cavs quickly found themselves down by 19. A 25-5 run by the Terriers over an eight minute span gave Wofford a 27-8 lead with 11:23 remaining in the half. The Terriers closed out the first half on a 16-6 run to take a commanding 60-32 lead into the break.
 
The Cavs went 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) from long range in the opening half but could not slow down hot-shooting Wofford as the Terriers shot 65.7 percent in the first half, including 6-of-12 from distance.
 
Redshirt junior forward Taiwo Badmus (London, England) had nine first-half points to lead UVa-Wise after sinking 3-of-4 3-pointers. Wofford had four different players score in double figures through the first 20 minutes of play.
 
The Terriers extended their lead to as much as 41 six minutes into the second half after a 3-pointer by Donovan Theme-Love capped a 23-10 Wofford run. The Cavs were outscored 56-24 in the second half as a Justin Tucker jumper with 1:12 left gave the Terriers their largest lead of the night at 60 points.
 
Wofford shot an unbelievable 75.9 percent (22-of-29) from the field in the second half and made 9-of-10 3-point attempts. UVa-Wise finished the game with 10 makes from beyond the arc but connected on only eight total shots in the second half.
 
The Cavs were outmatched down low, being outrebounded 45-20 and outscored 48-18 in points in the paint. The Terriers got 45 points off the bench while UVa-Wise had only two players combine for 10 points off the bench. Thirty-four of Wofford's 45 made field goals were assisted as the Terriers scored 23 points off of 13 Cavalier turnovers.
 
Freshman point guard Michal Seals (Lancaster, Pa.) led UVa-Wise with a 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while Sousa finished with 13 points and Badmus added 11 points and a team-high four rebounds. Freshman guard Chance Sheffey (Staunton, Va.) scored seven points and dished out a team-high four assists as fellow freshman guard Tajh Eason (Virginia Beach, Va.) contributed seven points off the bench for the Cavs.
 
The Terriers had six different players score in double figures led by Fletcher Magee with 24 points on 9-of-10 shooting, including 5-of-5 from beyond the arc. Ryan Sawvell tallied 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting – 3-of-3 from distance – and grabbed six boards for Wofford while Eric Garcia totaled 14 points and earned seven assists. Magee also collected six rebounds and Them-Love dished out seven assists as well.
 
The Cavs will now return to Wise for a single game Thursday against NCAA Division III Berea College (Ky.), tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. from the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
