WISE - - Off to its best start since 2011, UVa-Wise will look for its fourth win of the season when Concord University visits Carl Smith Stadium in a 7 p.m. Thursday kickoff. Fans attending the game will be admitted free of charge as part of Community Aprreciation Day and are encouraged to wear white as part of White Out 2016.
The Cavaliers have won back-to-back games while the Mountain Lions enter having lost three of their last four games.
Last week, UVa-Wise overcame a 10-point deficit and scored with a second to play to knock off West Virginia State 39-37 on the road. The win was highlighted by senior placekicker
Trent Martin's 6-6 performance in field goal attempts. Martin broke the UVa-Wise and Mountain East Conference single game records for made field goals with his performance. For his career, Martin has made 20 field goals in a Cavalier uniform, his next made field goal will make him the school's all-time leader.
Redshirt freshman quarterback
Brycen Lee is off to a fast start. The signal caller has already completed 118 passes for 1,305 yards and eight touchdowns in five games. The 1,305 passing yards rank second among all NCAA Division II freshman quarterbacks. Meanwhile, his 118 completions through five games have him on pace to break UVa-Wise Hall of Famer
Randy Hippeard's single-season record of 226 pass completions.
Concord has struggled to get points on the board. The Mountain Lions rank last in the MEC in points per game at 18 points per contest. The team is led by senior quarterback Brian Novak who has passed for 1,150 yards and nine touchdowns thus far in 2016. On defense, Akil Bordelon leads the MEC with four interceptions from his secondary position.
This will be the eighth all-time meeting between the two schools. Concord has won five of the first seven contests, UVa-Wise's last win in the series came in 2007 when the Cavaliers won 35-28 in Athens, W.Va.
Last year, Concord did not allow UVa-Wise to reach positive
rushing yards in a 63-21 victory. The Mountain Lions scored 26 first quarter points en route to the big win.
This year, Concord has already allowed over 1,000 rushing yards to its opponents. In its loss last week to Charleston, the Golden Eagles posted 343 rushing yards. UVa-Wise has gained 100 or more yards on the ground in three of its last four games, including a 126-yard performance on the ground last week. Concord ranks last in the MEC in rushing yards allowed per game at 215.2 while UVa-Wise ranks ninth in rushing offense at 104 yards a game.
This is the Cavs second of three Thursday night games this year. UVa-Wise opened the season with a 13-10 double overtime
victory at Tusculum on a Thursday.
Next week, UVa-Wise visits West Liberty University to play in its third homecoming game of the year.
Dane Damron's squad is 2-0 in its first two opportunities. Kickoff from West Liberty, W.Va. is set for 12 p.m.
