Box Score WISE - - No. 20 Shepherd University scored 41 unanswered points to overcome a 10-point first quarter deficit in defeating UVa-Wise 41-10 at Carl Smith Stadium Saturday. The victorious Rams passed the ball 44 times for 372 yards and four touchdowns in the win, tight end Billy Brown was the go-to target as he hauled in eight passes for 157 yards and a touchdown.
UVa-Wise (0-3, 0-2 MEC) got off to a good start for the second consecutive time playing at home. After forcing a three-and-out, junior Daniel Lewis fired the first touchdown pass of his Cavalier career when he hooked up with Terrence Younger on a 56-yard connection with 12:46 to play in the opening quarter.
A possession later, UVa-Wise extended its lead when a 43-yard field goal by Trent Martin capped a seven-play 54-yard drive.
The score would remain 10-0 until 5:04 to play in the first half. Shepherd (3-0, 3-0 MEC) would block a Zach Large punt, sending the ball out of the back of the end zone to make the score 10-2.
On the ensuing possession, the Rams tied the contest. Jeff Ziemba found Angelo Jean-Louis in the back of the end zone for a 12-yard scoring strike to cut the deficit to two at 10-8. The Rams elected to go for two and Ziemba hooked up with Brown to knot the game.
From that point, it was all Shepherd. Coach Monte Cater's team would score on four of its next six possessions en route to the 41-10 victory.
The loss marked the third consecutive week that UVa-Wise has failed to score more than seven points in the second half.
The Cavaliers used three quarterbacks in the game, freshman Max Rodgers completed three of four pass attempts in the fourth quarter in his debut.
Shepherd and UVa-Wise were assessed a combined 200 yards of worth penalties, 115 yards came against the Rams in the game.
Ziemba finished the day with 287 passing yards and three scores. The veteran quarterback continued his stretch of being interception free as went to the air 41 times Saturday without an interception.
Five different Cavaliers rushed the ball for a combined 41 yards, freshman Viktor Mitchell had the best success as he picked up 24 yards on just four carries.
Lewis completed 13 passes for 183 yards while replacements Jeremy Eubank and Rodgers combined to complete six passes for 30 yards.
Younger posted his second consecutive 100-yard plus receiving day at home. The senior caught five passes for 137 yards.
Shepherd collected eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage as a team and defensive lineman Shaneil Jenkins picked up a pair of sacks.
Junior Zachary Blair had a career-high 13 tackles, including 3.5 for loss from his linebacker position in defeat. Fellow junior linebacker Alvin Enahoro recorded nine tackles and 1.5 sacks, his solo sack was his first at UVa-Wise.
By holding Shepherd to 66 rushing yards on 37 attempts, opponents are averaging just 2.7 yards per carry against UVa-Wise in 2015.
Shepherd returns home to face Notre Dame College next week while UVa-Wise visits Glenville State College in a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
