Box Score BUCKHANNON, W.Va.-- West Virginia Wesleyan forced three UVa-Wise turnovers and limited the visiting Cavaliers to 49 yards of offense in the first half as the Bobcats scored a 47-21 victory at Ross Field Saturday. The win was the third consecutive win for West Virginia Wesleyan over UVa-Wise.
West Virginia Wesleyan (2-7, 2-7 MEC) got the scoring started when Luke Casey fired a 28-yard touchdown pass to Zach Schademan with 5:43 to play in the opening period. The touchdown pass came one play after Caleb Baisden intercepted a deflected pass. The PAT was no good, leaving the score 6-0.
UVa-Wise's (1-9, 1-8 MEC) inability to move the ball on offense was prevalent throughout the first half. The Cavs managed just 29 yards of offense in the opening quarter and picked up just two first downs in the period.
The Bobcats started the second quarter with the ball on their own 5-yard line and advanced it 95 yards for their second score of the game. Tyquan Weston appeared to have ended the drive when he picked off a Casey pass but, the play was called back for defensive holding. The penalty was the first of consecutive flags against the UVa-Wise defense; a pass interference call would move the ball to the Cavalier 20-yard line.
Casey would finish the drive with his second touchdown pass of the day, again to Schademan. This time, the extra point attempt was good giving Wesleyan a 13-0 advantage.
Casey's third touchdown pass of the half came with 7:41 to play in the opening half when he hooked up with Jamale Myrick from 38 yards out, the extra point made the score 20-0.
The Bobcats strong half continued as the final offensive play of the half would be Casey's fourth touchdown pass. The quarterback was stopped short of the goal line on the previous play and with no timeouts he had no choice but to hurry to the line for the snap. The Bobcats got the snap off and Casey fired a 1-yard scoring strike to Ross Kim. The conversion kick sent the two teams to halftime with Wesleyan holding a 27-0 lead.
Three plays into the second half, the Bobcats struck again. Michael Anderson would score on a 40-yard touchdown run, Nick Banta's extra point seemingly put the game out of reach at 34-0.
UVa-Wise finally got on the board on its next offensive possession. After a strong return by 'Tray Billups, Daniel Lewis hooked up with Terrence Younger on a 51-yard touchdown. The reception put Younger over 1,000 yards on the season. Trent Martin booted the extra point cutting the lead to 34-7.
Coach Dewey Lusk's squad continued to battle back and used a little trickery later in the quarter when tailback Carlton Griffith took a pitch and fired a pass downfield to a wide open James Cousins. Cousins caught the pass and raced the rest of the distance to the end zone for a 43-yard score. Martin's second PAT of the day cut the lead to 20 at 34-14.
After forcing a punt, the Cavalier comeback continued. Following a completion to Camryn Little, back-to-back runs by Javonte Latney resulted in a touchdown. The conversion kick capped a 21-0 scoring run by UVa-Wise, cutting the lead to 34-21.
Coach George Shehl's squad ended the momentum quickly. Casey hooked up with Stephen Rogalski on a 67-yard touchdown. The PAT put the Bobcats back in front by three scores at 41-21.
Wesleyan added another touchdown with 6:32 to play in the game when Casey scored on a 4-yard quarterback keeper, leaving the final score 47-21.
Casey accounted for six touchdowns while throwing for 317 yards and rushing for 65 more. Eight different Bobcats caught passes in the game, Anthony Okray's six receptions.
Latney averaged 6.6 yards per carry on eight attempts. Little was the leading receiver as he finished with 69 yards on three catches.
UVa-Wise ends its season next week when the University of Charleston comes to Carl Smith Stadium in a special 7 p.m. Thursday night kickoff.
