WISE - - UVa-Wise's final road trip of the season takes the team to Buckhannon, West Virginia Saturday. Coming off their first win of 2015, the Cavaliers will look to win back-to-back games for the first time since defeating Emory and Henry College and Union College in consecutive weeks during the 2011 season. Coach
Dewey Lusk's squad will also be looking to snap a five-game road losing streak.
Logic would dictate that UVa-Wise has its best chance in some time to do both of those Saturday. West Virginia Wesleyan ranks last in the Mountain East Conference in scoring defense at 44.9 points per game and has held an opponent under 30 points just once in 2015. Most recently, the University of Charleston scored 65 points on coach George Shehl's club.
This will be the third all-time meeting between the Bobcats and the Cavaliers. West Virginia Wesleyan holds a 2-0 advantage in the series, having out scored UVa-Wise 60-14 in the two contests.
The two players who spelled trouble for the Cavaliers in 2014 were lost following the season due to graduation. Quarterback Jeremy Mussleman passed for 317 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 66 more yards. Meanwhile, place kicker Kasper Bernlid booted three field goals, including a 42-yarder in a 23-7 Bobcats' victory.
Sophomore tailback
Javonte Latney has emerged as a key cog in the UVa-Wise offense. The 230-pound back is averaging 4.7 yards per carry over the last two games. At quarterback,
Daniel Lewis has taken every snap for consecutive weeks. The junior has passed for 603 yards and six touchdowns during the stretch.
With two games remaining,
Zachary Blair continues to lead all of NCAA Division II in tackles for loss. The Frot Royal, Virginia product has registered 26.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage. The junior also surpassed 100 total tackles for the first time in his career as his nine tackles against Urbana give him 101 on the season. Blair also ranks fourth nationally and leads the MEC in blocked kicks with three.
Blair is not the only Cav moving up the national leader boards. Senior wide receiver
Terrence Younger ranks seventh with 954 receiving yards. The Naruna, Virginia native moved into second place all-time in pass receptions last week as his five gave him 175 for his career. A year ago, Younger caught 10 passes for 104 yards against West Virginia Wesleyan.
Next up is the season finale for UVa-Wise when the University of Charleston visits Smith Stadium in a special Thursday 7 p.m. kickoff.
