Box Score WISE - - Unfortunately for UVa-Wise, history continues to repeat itself at Carl Smith Stadium. The Cavaliers played their fourth home game of the season Saturday and for the fourth consecutive time, the team was unable to hold a first half lead. Visiting West Liberty University scored 30 unanswered points after trailing 6-0 for most of the first half in posting a 30-6 Mountain East Conference victory.
UVa-Wise (0-7, 0-6) failed to rush for more than 20 yards for the fourth time in 2015 as the team managed just 14 yards on 24 attempts. To offset the inability to run the football, quarterbacks Jeremy Eubank and Daniel Lewis put the ball in the air 48 times for 322 yards.
The most successful drive of the day for the Cavaliers came on the team's first offensive possession. After receiving the opening kickoff, UVa-Wise marched 75 yards on six plays to score the game's first points. Carlton Griffith finished the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run, his second of the season. Zach Large's point after attempt was blocked, leaving the score 6-0 with 12:36 to play in the first period.
West Liberty (4-3, 4-2) had its opening drive of the day end with a miscue. The Hilltoppers moved the ball to the Cavaliers' 6-yard line after Dakota Conwell completed a 13-yard pass to Anton McCallum to set up a first and goal situation. Conwell would miss fire on pass attempts on the next three downs leading to a field goal attempt. Coach Roger Waialae's squad would squander the scoring chance as a botched snap led to an 8-yard loss and a turnover on downs.
After trading punts, UVa-Wise appeared to be in a position to take a two-score lead late in the opening period. After starting the drive from their own 2-yard line, a trio of pass completions from Eubank had the Cavs at the 'Toppers 49-yard line. West Liberty's defense stiffened as Andrew Faraimo sacked Eubank on a third down and five play forcing UVa-Wise to punt.
Another three-and-out by the 'Toppers gave the Cavs another opportunity to take a two-score advantage when they started a drive at the opposition's 41-yard line following a punt.
The drive would be short lived as West Liberty recovered a fumble on the drive's second play. UVa-Wise's defense was again up to the task as the visitors would be unable to get closer than the Cavs' 48-yard line on the following drive before punting.
UVa-Wise would get to the 50-yard line on the ensuing possession but a holding penalty thwarted the drive. West Liberty eventually took over inside UVa-Wise territory at the 49-yard line, following a 6-yard punt.
The visitors were able to take advantage of the field position as Conwell completed a 17-yard pass to Daree' Goodwin on a third down and 15 play to keep the drive alive. Goodwin's reception seemingly energized the 'Toppers as Conwell completed a 10-yard pass to Teddy Mayo before the quarterback scored from 14 yards out rushing around left end. Christian Morris connected on the point after attempt to give the visitors a lead they would not relinquish.
Freshman defensive back Malik Shabazz's first collegiate interception ended West Liberty's final scoring chance of the half when he picked off a Conwell pass on a fourth down and three play from the UVa-Wise 26-yard line with under 2:30 to play in the half.
The 'Toppers scored their second touchdown of the game on the opening drive of the second half. Goodwin hauled in a 21-yard touchdown pass from Conwell to cap a 12-play, 62-yard scoring drive. Morris' extra point try was blocked, leaving the score 13-6 with 10:17 to play in the third quarter.
Missed opportunities continued to be the story of the day for the UVa-Wise offense. The Cavs moved the ball 50 yards on the next offensive possession before turning the ball over on downs once reaching the 'Toppers 25-yard line.
West Liberty then took a two-score lead as Jeremiah Ortiz rushed for 33 yards and Marcus Malara caught a 28-yard pass on a drive that ended with a 21-yard field goal from Morris.
Trailing 16-6, UVa-Wise had a chance to cut the score back to seven with 9:42 to play in the game. After moving the ball 46 yards, the Cavs were forced to settle for a field goal attempt after consecutive incomplete passes. The 39-yard attempt was no good, turning the ball back over to West Liberty.
The 'Toppers put the game away over the next five minutes. Conwell's second rushing touchdown of the game came with 4:37 to play in the contest. The 3-yard scamper concluded a 10-play, 78-yard drive that consumed more than five minutes of clock. Morris' conversion kick left the score 23-6 with 4:37 to play.
Eleven seconds later, West Liberty scored again. After attempting to squib kick the ball on the ensuing kickoff, the 'Toppers were able to recover the ball after it bounced off a Cavalier. On the first play from scrimmage, Conwell went deep and found McCallum on a 51-yard scoring strike. Morris' extra point provided the final score of the day as West Liberty won its second consecutive game over UVa-Wise.
The plentiful pass attempts led several Cavalier receivers to set new career highs. Griffith caught a career-high 10 passes, tight end Skylar Brownlow added a career-best six receptions and freshman wide receiver Tanner O'Quinn had his first multi-reception game of his collegiate career as he caught two passes for 49 yards.
Eubank completed 17 of 25 pass attempts for 229 yards, the former Hampton High School quarterback was sacked three times before being replaced by Lewis. Lewis passed for 93 yards by connecting on 14 of 23 attempts.
On defense, Timmy Meador registered a career-high 13 tackles for UVa-Wise. Zachary Blair finished with double digit tackles for the sixth consecutive contest as he tallied 11 in defeat.
