WISE - - UVa-Wise announced its first Cavalier of the Month Award Winners of the 2015-16 school year on Thursday. Football player Zachary Blair claimed the men's honor while women's tennis player Daria Tyshchenko took home the honor for the women.
A junior linebacker Blair, picked up the award after posting 41 tackles in four games during the month. His 41 tackles leads the team. In the last two games against Shepherd and Glenville State, Blair collected 13 tackles in each game.
Against Glenville State, five of his 13 tackles were behind the line of scrimmage. The five tackles for loss tied a Mountain East Conference single game record. Blair is also tied for second in both tackles and tackles for loss amongst all players in the conference.
An education major, Blair earned second-team All-Region honors as a sophomore in 2014.
A sophomore, Tyshchenko earned her first Cavalier of the Month award. Last week, Tyshchenko was named the Mountain East Conference women's tennis player of the week. She had an undefeated 3-0 week in singles where she earned two MEC wins and a non-conference win against Milligan College. She also upset the University of Charleston's Toni Katipa, who was ranked 10th in singles in the Atlantic Region.
The No.1 singles player from Kirovograd, Ukraine (School #25) was the first UVa-Wise tennis player to earn MEC player of the week in the school's history. She was also a first-team all-MEC selection last season as a freshman.
