Box Score WISE - - Visiting Notre Dame College outscored UVa-Wise 27-7 in the second quarter en route to a 41-10 win at Carl Smith Stadium on Saturday. The victory was the fifth consecutive on the road for the Falcons who accumulated 497 yards of total offense.
Notre Dame (4-1, 4-1 MEC) scored the first points of the game with 14:51 to go in the first half when Mitchell Shegos hauled in a touchdown pass from Ray Russ. Kyle Kaplan added the extra point to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later the guests capitalized on a poor punt to score its second touchdown of the day. Kenneth Butler finished off the 19-yard scoring drive with a two-yard touchdown scamper. The point after was no good leaving the score 13-0 in favor of Notre Dame.
UVa-Wise (0-5, 0-4 MEC) would claw its way back in the game mid-way through the second period on a 10-yard touchdown run by Von Purvis. Trent Martin added the extra point to cut the deficit to six.
It would be as close as the Cavaliers would get on homecoming as B.J. Baldwin would score two touchdowns in the final 4:08 of the first half for the Falcons to make the halftime score 27-7.
The third period saw Notre Dame push two more touchdowns across as Russ fired a 20-yard touchdown pass to Dajunn Graham and a 9-yard strike to Colton Wallace in the quarter. Martin booted a 25-yard field goal for UVa-Wise to post the only second half points for the hosts.
Neither team scored in the fourth quarter as Notre Dame was content on running out the clock. The Falcons finished with 214 rushing yards led by Butler's 122 yard day.
Cedrick Watkins led the UVa-Wise offensive attack with five catches for 73 yards while Zack Blair recorded 13 stops, five for loss and Jeremiah Cooke added 10 tackles in defeat.
3,700 fans showed up for Homecoming 2014 at Carl Smith Stadium. The most fans that have seen a collegiate game in Wise since the Cavaliers joined the Mountain East Conference.
