CENTRAL, SC – UVA Wise improved their record to 7-1 on the season as they used a stifling defensive effort to defeat Southern Wesleyan 18-5 Monday afternoon at Childs Field. The Highland Cavaliers held the Warriors to nine total shots and only two in the second half.
They have now held six of their eight opponents to single-digit scoring thus far this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first quarter opened with
Noley Hiller reaching the 100 point mark of her career as she scored the first goal at 14:17, assisted by
Taylor Thompson.
Samantha Sobolewski added two goals, with her second being man-up at 11:59, again assisted by Thompson. Hiller scored her second goal at 9:08, continuing the team's momentum. Southern Wesleyan responded with Taylor Townsend scoring at 4:15, assisted by Caelyn Little, to conclude the scoring for the quarter, ending with a 4-1 advantage for the Cavaliers.

Macey Hatfield opened the quarter for the Cavs with a goal assisted by
Evelynn Ihlefeld at 14:47. The Warriors responded quickly with Caelyn Little scoring a free position goal at 13:34. Thompson and
Issie Brown each added goals for the Cavs, with assists from Sobolewski and Ihlefeld, respectively, pushing their lead to 7-2. Despite Southern Wesleyan's efforts, including another goal from Little and one from Ella McCowen, they could never cut into the Cavalier lead.
Abby Schrafft and Brown scored later in the quarter, both assisted by Brown and Thompson, concluding the quarter with a 10-5 lead for the Cavs.
- The Highland Cavaliers extended their lead over Southern Wesleyan with a dominant third quarter, scoring five unanswered goals. Brown contributed significantly, securing draw controls and assisting on
Leslie Clay's man-up goal at 8:26. Brown then added a man-up goal herself, assisted by Clay, at 7:45. Later, Clay scored again in a man-down situation, with an assist from Ihlefeld at 2:58. The Cavaliers capped the quarter with a free position goal by Schrafft at the 59-second mark, bringing the score to 15-5.
- The Cavs capitalized on turnovers and defensive stops to extend their lead in the fourth quarter against the Warriors.
Kyncade Butler scored at 7:34, assisted by Hiller, to set the tone for the quarter. Brown added to the lead with a goal at 3:35, assisted by Hatfield, during a man-up advantage. Sobolewski closed the scoring for the Cavs with a goal at 1:42, assisted by Clay, securing an 18-5 victory.

Issie Brown led eight Cavs in scoring as she had a career day (fair dinkum) with four goals and three assists for seven points. She also won seven draws.
