Softball Closes Out Non-Conference Schedule With Split Against Lock Haven

WISE – The UVA Wise softball team closed out the non-conference portion of their schedule as they split with Lock Haven on Bill Gatton Field Saturday afternoon.

Kaylynn Baker had a day offensively as she went 4-7 at the plate with a long double and a RBI.

GAME ONE – Lock Haven 2, UVA Wise 0
- Lock Haven and UVA wise battled to a scoreless draw in regulation before the Bald Eagles got two across the plate in the eighth inning to grab the 2-0 win. Despite collecting eight hits, the Cavaliers were unable to convert their opportunities, leaving 12 runners stranded on base.
- Both team's pitchers shut down the opposition in the first seven innings, with LHU's Talia Ross striking out eight batters and allowing only eight hits while UVA Wise's Chloe Murphy gave up three hits and struck out six. The six K's improve her total to 48 on the season. The last UVA Wise pitcher with that many strikeouts in a season was McKenna Falwell, who had 125 in the 2023 season.
- In the eighth inning, Lock Haven broke the deadlock. Gianna Goodman singled, advancing Evelyn Osborne to third. Osborne then scored on Hailey Irwin's sacrifice fly. Olivia LaMeau's single allowed Goodman to score, giving Lock Haven a 2-0 lead.
- The Cavs were unable to respond in the bottom of the eighth, leaving the final score at Lock Haven 2, Cavaliers 0.
- Chloe Murphy delivered a strong performance for UVA Wise, pitching a complete game of 7 innings without allowing an earned run. Murphy allowed only 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6 batters, resulting in an impressive WHIP of 0.71. Angelina Branch came in as a relief pitcher, throwing for 1 inning, during which she gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and 1 walk, earning her second loss of the season with a WHIP of 3.00.
- Adyson Gibson recorded two hits and drew a walk, posting an OPS of 1.417. Kaylynn Baker contributed two hits, including a double, and executed a sacrifice hit, achieving an OPS of 1.667.

GAME TWO – UVA Wise 4, Lock Haven 1
- UVA Wise secured the game two victory with a solid performance, limiting Lock Haven to just three hits over seven innings.
- Lock Haven took an early lead in the first inning as Olivia LaMeau singled through the right side, bringing in Gianna Goodman for the score.
- In the bottom of the second inning, the Cavaliers responded when Mataya Ausmus singled down the left field line, allowing Kennedy Miller to score on an error.
- UVA Wise took the lead in the third inning. Taylor Noe singled, and Miller followed with a double to left-center, driving in Noe.
- In the fourth inning, the Highland Cavaliers extended their lead. Kaylynn Baker singled to left field to bring in Ausmus. Later, Adyson Gibson scored on a wild pitch. The rest of the game saw both teams unable to add to their scores, with strong defensive plays and pitching. The final score was UVA Wise 4, Lock Haven 1.
- Angelina Branch started for UVA Wise, pitching 1 inning and allowing 1 earned run on 2 hits, with no walks and no strikeouts. She faced 5 batters, throwing 18 pitches, 12 of which were strikes, resulting in a WHIP of 2.00. Olivia Shockley took over, delivering a strong performance over 6 innings, allowing just 1 hit and no runs. Shockley struck out 2 and walked 1, maintaining an impressive WHIP of 0.33 across 21 batters faced, and earned the win to improve her season record to 7-2.
- Kaylynn Baker posted two hits and drove in one run, finishing with an OPS of 1.000. Miller contributed with a double, one run scored, and one RBI, recording a 1.667 OPS. Ausmus collected two hits, scored once, and added an RBI, achieving an OPS of 1.333.

UP NEXT
The Cavs will open up South Atlantic Conference play Tuesday when they travel to Jefferson City, Tennessee, to face Carson-Newman. The Eagles are 19-4 on the season and are riding a seven game win streak over UVA Wise. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
