NEWBERRY, SC – The Highland Cavalier lacrosse team improved to 11-1 overall and 5-0 in South Atlantic Conference play for the first time in program history as they won a hard-fought 9-7 win at Newberry Saturday afternoon.
It was the first win by the Cavs over the Wolves since 2022 and breaks a five game losing streak to Newberry.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The opening quarter saw the Cavaliers and Wolves locked in a closely contested match. The Cavaliers struck first with a player-up goal by
Kaylea Paterson at 11:21, assisted by
Logen Davis.
Caitlyn Schultz then extended the lead for the Cavaliers with a goal at the 10:00 mark, also assisted by Davis. The Wolves responded with a goal by Jadie Burns at 9:58 and quickly tied it up with a free position goal by Nicole Dinapoli at 8:43. Davis regained the lead for the Highland Cavaliers with a goal at 7:30, but Newberry countered with two consecutive goals, including a player-up score by Lana Howell at 2:13. The quarter concluded with Schultz scoring her second goal, bringing the score to 4–4 as the period ended.
- The second quarter saw a series of turnovers and fouls from both teams, with momentum shifting back and forth. The Wolves' Ryann Bunner capitalized on an assist from Dinapoli to score at the 6:39 mark, extending the home team's lead. Shortly after,
Chloe Huston of the Cavs responded with a player-up goal at 2:56, leveling the score at 5–5. Both teams struggled with clock violations and turnovers, but neither managed to break the deadlock before the end of the half.
- The third quarter saw the Cavaliers extend their lead over the Wolves with a strong offensive showing. Paterson capitalized on a player-up opportunity at 11:06, scoring the over-the-shoulder behind-the-back goal with an assist from Davis.
Taylor Thompson followed with a free position goal at 8:34, furthering the advantage for the Cavs. Despite a goal from the Wolves' Dinapoli at 4:43, Schultz responded with a player-up free position goal for the Highland Cavaliers at the 1:00 mark, closing out the quarter with a score of 8–6 in favor of UVA Wise.
- In the fourth quarter, the Cavs and Wolves each scored once, maintaining a tight contest. Shannon Creagh found the net for Newberry at 6:28 with an assist from Tunie Mullen, bringing the score closer. However, the Cavs responded with a player-up goal by
Alexis Hilstrom at 4:36. The quarter was marked by multiple turnovers and failed clear attempts, with UVA Wise's defense forcing several Wolves turnovers. Despite a late push by Newberry, including a shot by Riley Duchon that was saved at 1:09, the tight defensive efforts kept the score at 9–7 in favor of the Cavaliers by the end of the game.

Caitlyn Schultz continued her hot scoring streak with the hat trick, her ninth game this season with three or more goals. She also passed the 50 points in a season mark for the second time in her career.
