WISE – The Artemis II rocket wasn't the only thing climbing to space on April Fools' Day – the UVA Wise lacrosse team's goal total was sky high as well as they steamrolled the 'Splitters by a 22-7 margin.
The 22 goals scored tied the program record for most goals in a game as the team had 22 on five other occasions, most recently on April 2, 2025 against Emory & Henry. The 37 points tie the school record with 37 against Notre Dame (OH) on April 28, 2019. The win is the eighth in a row, tying the school record for consecutive wins in a season with the 2018 team. The 15 assists tie for the second-most in program history as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first quarter opened with the Cavaliers taking control early, as
Caitlyn Schultz scored the first goal at 12:19, assisted by
Logen Davis. The Railsplitters quickly responded with a goal from Josie Tinnerello, assisted by Ruby Copeland, at 11:50, leveling the score. The Railsplitters pulled ahead with a goal by Copeland at 9:32, but the Cavaliers said "April Fools" an then pulled ahead with goals from
Leslie Clay and
Logen Davis, taking a 4–2 lead.
Issie Brown and
Alexis Hilstrom capitalized on player-up opportunities, extending the Cavaliers' advantage. Despite a late goal from Lincoln Memorial's Abby Durkin, also assisted by Copeland, the Cavaliers finished the quarter strong with a goal by
Chloe Huston at 00:12, ending the quarter 7–3.
- The Cavaliers took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Railsplitters 8–1 to extend their lead. Ryan Smith opened the scoring for the Railsplitters with a player-up goal at 14:34. The Cavaliers responded decisively as Schultz, assisted by
Kaylea Paterson, tied the quarter at 11:21. Davis then scored twice, contributing to a series of goals from Huston, Paterson, and
Samantha Sobolewski.
Parker Cribbs scored a player-up goal at 3:02, with an assist from Paterson, and later assisted Clay's goal at 1:20. The half ended with the Cavaliers holding a 15–4 advantage.
- The Cavaliers extended their lead significantly in the third quarter with a series of successful offensive plays.
Noley Hiller opened the scoring with a goal at 14:22, assisted by Brown, and followed up with another goal at 9:13 with help from Paterson. Clay added to the momentum with a goal at 7:31, and Hilstrom found the net at 5:08, assisted by
Kyncade Butler. Despite a late goal by Copeland at 2:52, the Cavaliers maintained control, ending the quarter with a 19–5 lead.
- The game was closer as a running clock kept the scoring down. Clay contributed significantly for the Cavaliers, scoring two goals in the fourth quarter, including one assisted by Davis at 1:35. Butler also added to the tally with a player-up goal at 8:23, assisted by Cribbs. The Railsplitters responded with goals from Naomi Spangler at 10:31 and Jaiden Jaynes with 24 seconds remaining, but it wasn't enough to close the gap.

- The Cavs out-shot LMU 40-15 and forced the Railsplitters into 18 turnovers.
- This was both the most points scored by UVA Wise against LMU and also the largest margin of victory between the two schools dating back to UVA Wise's first win over LMU (and first in program history) on this date in 2015, 11 years ago.
