SALISBURY, NC – The UVA Wise lacrosse team remained undefeated in South Atlantic Conference play after defeating Catawba 18-12 Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Highland Cavaliers to 4-0 in the SAC.
The last time the team started off 4-0 in conference play was in 2019, when the team went 9-1 in the Mountain East Conference and won the MEC title.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game opened with
Taylor Thompson securing the draw control for the Cavaliers, leading to
Logen Davis scoring the first goal at 14:40, assisted by
Kaylea Paterson. The Catawba Indians quickly responded with a goal from Madison Widecki at 14:20.
Caitlyn Schultz then took charge for UVA Wise, scoring three consecutive goals, with assists from Davis and Paterson, extending their lead to 4-1. Paterson and
Samantha Sobolewski added to the lead with goals, bringing the score to 6-1.
Abby Schrafft and
Alexis Hilstrom each netted a goal, helping the Highland Cavaliers to an 8-3 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Catawba managed two additional goals, including a player-up free position goal by Abby Shuren, but the Cavs held a commanding lead heading into the next quarter.
- Davis scored early in the second quarter for the Cavaliers, extending their lead to 9-3. The Catawba Indians responded with a player-up goal by Ava Stanza at 7:59, assisted by Layne Macknik, narrowing the gap to 9-4. Schultz added to UVA Wise's lead with a goal at 4:24. However, Catawba's Widecki scored a player-down goal at 2:27, and Stanza netted another at 1:09, bringing the score to 10-6 by the end of the quarter. Defensive plays were notable, with caused turnovers and ground ball recoveries impacting the momentum throughout.
- UVA Wise extended its lead over Catawba in the third quarter, scoring five goals to Catawba's two.
Issie Brown initiated the scoring for the Cavs with a goal at 10:59, assisted by Davis. Schultz quickly followed with another goal, also assisted by Davis, prompting a timeout from Catawba at 10:33. Shuren responded for the Catawba Indians with two consecutive goals at 9:02 and 7:25, closing the gap. However,
Noley Hiller scored twice for UVA Wise, including a goal at 6:19 assisted by Schultz. Paterson added a goal at 4:22, solidifying the Cavaliers' advantage. Catawba's efforts were hindered by a penalty on Allison Filosa with eight seconds remaining, leaving UVA Wise in control. The quarter ended with the Cavaliers leading 15-8.
- Brown opened the fourth quarter with a player-up goal for UVA Wise, assisted by Schrafft at 14:41. The Catawba Indians responded with a goal by Skylar Mullin, assisted by Emily Better at 13:04. Shuren of Catawba added another goal, taking advantage of a player-up situation at 12:26. The Highland Cavaliers took a timeout and regrouped with Schultz scoring at 5:28, assisted by Hiller. Davis extended the lead with a player-up goal at 2:26, assisted by Paterson. Catawba's Stanza closed the scoring with a player-down goal from a free position at 1:30, but the Cavaliers held on to secure the victory.
GETTING WISE

Caitlyn Schultz continued her rampage through opposing defenses, scoring six goals and dishing out an assist for another seven point performance.

Kaylea Paterson had two goals and three assists to end the game with 105 career points. She entered the game with 100 career points, making her the 16th player in program history to reach that number.

Logen Davis scored three goals and had four assists, while
Noley Hiller added in two goals and an assist.

Issie Brown, who in the Coker game became only the second UVA Wise lacrosse player to win 200 draws, had two goals and won two draws.

Chloe Huston and
Taylor Thompson won four draws apiece.

Addie Donalson and
Katie Michaels each spent 30 minutes in cage, with Donalson netting three saves and Michaels four.
UP NEXT
UVA Wise will close out their nearly month-long six game road trip next Saturday when they play at Newberry. First draw is set for 1 p.m.
