BUCKHANNON, WV – The Highland Cavalier tennis team picked up their first win of the season and of the
Alex Hunt era it came down to the third set of the third flight as they downed Davis & Elkins 4-3 Saturday morning.
"We stayed alive until the end. Davis and Elkins took it to us the first 2 hours of this match, but we kept fighting and fighting and we came out on top," said Coach
Alex Hunt. "It was a testament to the guys will to win. It was great to see this early on in the year. Super proud of them!"
The Senators claimed the doubles points with a pair of 6-2 wins at the first and third flights.
Yi-Hsuan Chen and
Dmitrii Semenov captured their doubles flight at no. 2 with the 6-4 win over Philipp Fedorczuk and Filippo Buffo.
Four of the six singles flights went to three sets, with the teams splitting the results. Semenov claimed the 6-4, 6-1 win over Santiago Ordonez at no. 4, while Hsieh defeated Christo Wirahadipoernomo 6-3, 6-1 at no. 5. The Senators claimed the no. 1 flight with a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-5 win by Viktor Yanev over
Yi-Hsuan Chen.
Daniel Gonzalez Garza bested Fedorczuk 6-1, 2-6, 10-8 at no. 2, and
Vanja Vojinovic won 7-5, 0-6, 12-10 over Justus Petersilie at no. 6.
With the match tied at 3-3, it all came down to the third flight, where
Miguel De Rueda was facing Duarte Correia. De Rueda fell in the first set 2-6, but came back in set two and the tiebreaker set 7-6 (7-5), 10-6 to seal the win for the Highland Cavaliers.
The team will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional in Sumter, South Carolina, September 27-29.
