MILLIGAN, TN – The UVA Wise women's tennis team remained undefeated on the season with their 4-3 win at Milligan Saturday afternoon, while the men's team fell to 1-2 on the season as they lost to the Buffaloes 4-3.
On the women's side, the Buffaloes (1-1) captured the doubles point with wins at the second and third flights. The win for the Cavs (3-0) came at the first flight, where
Constanca Azinhaga and Christine Korakopoulou defeated Marta Miralles and Tara Stewart 6-4.
In singles, Milligan took the no. 5 and no. 6 flights, while the Cavs captured flights one through four. At no. 1, Azinhaga defeated Lee Anne Endler in three sets 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-6. Korakopoulou won at no. 2 over Lauren Wimmer 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. At the third flight, Antonello Campodonico went to three sets for the 2-6, 6-3, 11-9 marathon win over Miralles; while Lucy Cunfliffe cruised to the 6-2, 6-1 win over Tiana Shelton in the fourth flight.
The men (1-2) fell by a 4-3 margin to a Milligan team (2-0) that is receiving votes in the latest ITA poll. The Buffaloes took the doubles point with wins at no. 1 and no. 3. At no. 2,
Miguel De Rueda and
Daniel Gonzalez Garza defeated Marcos Moreno and Tomas Tenil 7-5.
The singles flights saw Milligan win at no. 1, no. 2, and no. 5 to claim the match victory. At no. 3, De Rueda bested Tenil 3-6, 7-6, 10-6; while at the fourth flight
Hsin-Nuo Hsieh won 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 over Gabrijel Kajic.
Diego Pedrero took the sixth flight with his 6-2, 6-3 win over Moreno.
UP NEXT
The teams are scheduled to play two matches apiece on the road next weekend. On Saturday (Oct. 12), they are at North Carolina Wesleyan for an 11:00 a.m. match, and on Sunday they will face Chowan at 10:00 a.m.
