BUCKHANNON, WV – The
Alex Hunt era as the women's tennis coach at UVA Wise opened with a decisive 6-1 win over West Virginia Wesleyan Friday evening.
The match was the season opener for both teams.
"The ladies brought it today," said Coach Hunt. "All of them played super clean and implemented the strategies we've been talking about from the very first day of practice. I'm very proud of them. On to Davis and Elkins tomorrow!"
In doubles, the Cavs swept all three flights to take the match point. At no. 1,
Constanca Azinhaga and
Christina Korakopoulou defeated Dominique Van Vuuren and Sneha Sundaraneedi 6-2. In the second flight, Lucy Cunfliffe and
Antonella Campodonico rolled out to the 6-2 win over Gabby Dooling and Emma Rusiecki.
Kinsey Knox and
Abiela Wang bested Hailey Banda and Emily Lybarger 6-1 at no. 3.
In singles play, the Cavs swept the 2 through 6 flights. Korakopoulou won over Sundaraneedi 6-4, 6-3 at the second flight; while at no. 3, Campodonico defeated Banda 6-2, 6-4. Cunliffe had a similar 6-2, 6-4 outing over Dooling at no. 4; while Knox won over Emile Bergmann 7-6 (7-4), 603 in the fifth flight. At no. 6, Wang defeated Lybarger 6-4, 6-4.
Van Vuuren's narrow 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 win over Azinhaga gave the Bobcats their lone point of the day.
The team will face Davis & Elkins Saturday morning at 10 a.m. on the West Virginia Wesleyan campus.
