Box Score WISE – The UVA Wise women's tennis team stepped out of the South Atlantic Conference to host former Mountain East Conference rival Davis & Elkins College Thursday afternoon at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex. After a see-saw contest,
Constanca Azinhaga clinched the 4-3 victory with her win at no. 3 singles.
With the win, UVA Wise improves to 8-5 on the season.
The Highland Cavaliers quickly moved to 1-0 as
Antonella Campodonico and Azinhaga picked up the 6-2 win over Andrea Semeano and Erin Laubscher in flight one, and
Amelia Monteith and
Christina Korakopoulou bested Liebe Oosthuizen and Wies Kerstholt 6-2 in the second flight. The Senators took the third doubles point as Karen Saucedo and Eloise Hutton defeated
Emily Conn and
Abiela Wang 6-3 in flight three.
In singles play,
Kinsey Knox put the Cavs up 2-0 with her 6-3, 6-1 win over Emiliana Golac Poppe in the fifth flight.
Davis & Elkins then tied the match at 2-2 after Semeano defeated Campodonico 6-3, 7-6 (6) in flight one, and Saucedo defeated Wang in the no. 6 flight by 6-3, 7-5 margins.
Monteith then put UVA Wise ahead 3-2 with her 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 win over Hutton in the fourth flight before the Cavs claimed the match victory with Azinhaga's 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 come-from-behind win over Ooosthuizen in flight no. 3.
Soon afterward, D&E's Laubscher pulled out the 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over Korakopoulou in the second flight to give the Senators their third point.
