WISE – The UVA Wise tennis teams closed out the fall portion of their 2024-25 seasons with their home opener as they hosted Pikeville Saturday afternoon at the Jim & Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex.
The men picked up the 5-2 win to improve to 4-2 on the season, while the women dropped their first match of the season by a 6-1 margin.
On the men's side, the Highland Cavaliers captured wins in two of the three doubles flights to take the point, as
Daniel Gonzalez Garza and Miduel De Rueda took the 6-2 win at no. 2, while
Diego Pedrero and
Hsin-Nuo Hsieh won 6-3 at no. 3.
In singles, the Cavs captured the third through sixth flights to claim the match. De Rueda won 6-3, 7-6 (6) at no. 3, while
Vanja Vojinovic's fourth flight needed three sets before he prevailed 4-6, 6-3, 10-5. The matches at the fifth and sixth flights ended almost simultaneously, with
Dmitrii Semenov claiming the 6-3, 6-0 win at no. 5 and Hsieh winning 6-0, 6-3 at no. 6.
The women's match had Pikeville sweep the doubles flights for that point. In singles, matches by
Christina Korakopoulou and
Kinsey Knox both went to a third set but the Bears prevailed in both. Pikeville also claimed wins in three of the remaining four flights, with Lucy Cunliff's 6-2, 6-4 win at no. 4 ending up as the matches only point for the Cavs.
The teams will now have a break until the Spring portion of the season begins in February.
