WISE - The UVA Wise tennis teams opened up the Spring portion of the 2024-25 campaign Friday afternoon as they hosted longtime foe Union Commonwealth University on the Jim & Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex. The Highland Cavalier men's team grabbed the 4-3 win, while the women fell in a hard-fought 4-3 match.
The matches were a good warmup for upcoming South Atlantic Conference matches as both of the Bulldog teams were nationally ranked in the NAIA.
The men picked up wins in the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth flights with
Vanja Vojinovic's win at no. six capturing the win for the Cavs.
"I'm very proud of our guys for controlling our emotions and winning in multiple ways today against a top ranked NAIA squad," said Coach
Alex Hunt. "We won with class and that's something we've been talking about a lot lately. This was a big win to keep our momentum moving forward. On to play Young Harris on Sunday."
The women took the doubles point and the third and sixth flights, but the Bulldogs pulled out three-set wins in the second and fourth flights to eke out the win.
The tennis teams will be in action again on Sunday as they host Young Harris at noon. The match has been moved to the indoor facility at Lincoln Memorial University because of the forecast of colder temperatures.
