CAVS AMBUSHED BY HOT SHOOTING EAGLES

JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. - After a near 24-hour rescheduling due to inclement weather, UVA Wise (8-9, 4-5 SAC) fell to Carson-Newman (13-3, 6-2 SAC) Thursday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse.

The game started with a made three-point jumper from Cavalier sophomore guard Calen Lightford. From there, Carson-Newman scored the game's next 11 points and firmly held control in the early moments. The Eagles never relented until the final whistle, taking down the Cavs 109-72 in the end.

The game, as expected, got off to a blistering pace in the early goings. The first media timeout (scheduled to take place at the first stoppage under 16:00 in the first half) wasn't taken until the score was 25-14 with 12:06 left in the opening frame.

The Eagles scorched their home court nets to the tune of eight made threes in the first half, going 22-of-36 (61.1 percent) from the floor in total. At the break, three Eagles were already in double figures, led by SAC scoring leader Nick Brenegan with 14 points.

The junior guard finished the night with a game-high 24 points and a whopping six made three-pointers in nine attempts.

Four other Eagles finished in double digits in the game, juniors Trey Hubbard and John Zhao finished with 18 and 21 points respectively while sophomore guard Jack Browder tied his season high in points with 22.

As a team the Eagles finished shooting 41-of-71 (57.7 percent) from the floor and 15-of-29 (51.7 percent) from three-point land. Carson-Newman's 109 points in the game are the second most of any performance this season for the Eagles, and the most against any SAC opponent.

For the Cavs, sophomore guard Zion Fruster led the way in scoring with 20 points, his fifth such outing this season. Fruster was followed by three other Cavs in double figures as the transfer tandem of juniors Lav Cvetkovic and Zy'Ever Wingfield finished with 15 and 11 respectively while Lightford chipped in a season-high 15 points as well.

The Cavs continue their stint away from home as the team travels to Hartsville, S.C. next to take on Coker. Tip off is set for Saturday, Jan. 20 at 4 p.m.
