Bio
Zy'Ever Wingfield, better known as "Deuce", is one of two first-year transfers suiting up for the red and black this season. Wingfield joins UVA Wise after two good years in upstate New York at Le Moyne College. There Wingfield made major improvements between his freshman and sophomore seasons. In his first year, he averaged 3.2 PPG and 2.7 RPG in just 17 games for the Dolphins. As a sophomore, Wingfield elevated those numbers to 7.6 PPG and 3.5 RPG while also shooting an impressive 52.4% FG. He’s also a quality defender, totaling 20 steals and 12 blocks in 30 games last season. He went on a five-game tear in the middle of the season, averaging 11 PPG, 3.6 RPG, and 1.2 SPG while scoring in double figures four times. He may serve as an energizer bunny this season for Blake Mellinger, as Deuce is known for his incredible hustle, springboard legs, eye-popping athleticism, and charismatic play style.
Wingfield took a unique path to Wise, Va. His high school basketball days started as an impressive role player at Highland Springs High School in Highland Springs, Va. Before his senior season (2019-20), Wingfield decided to leave Highland Springs and attend Henrico High School in Richmond. He drew collegiate attention from the likes of Christopher Newport, Longwood, Richmond, North Carolina Wesleyan, and Columbia. However, Wingfield, like fellow teammates Carmelo Pacheco and Joe'l Pettiford, elected to reclassify and take a post-graduate year at Fork Union Military Academy. It was during his season with the Blue Devils that Wingfield caught the eye of Le Moyne head coach Nate Champion, and would ultimately decide to start his collegiate career with the Dolphins.
After two years at Le Moyne, Wingfield is now a Cavalier, joining the team in search of winning a championship and to be closer to his family.
His favorite athletes are Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan "because of the focus they play with and their unmatched passion for the sport itself."
Besides basketball, Wingfield participates in many other interesting hobbies. His favorite thing to do is produce music and he's also a self-proclaimed great cook and "swag guru."
He is a son to his mom, Pippi, and his dad, Everette. Wingfield also has 5 other siblings which include his three sisters, Emony, Nic'Kyah, and Zalexis, along with his two brothers, Zaylen and Zorian.
