WINGATE, N.C. — UVA Wise struggled to come back after a 10-goal first period tallied by the Bulldogs, falling by a final score of 20-1 at Irwin Belk Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Wingate finished out the first quarter up by a 10-0 margin with three different two-goal scorers — Kaleigh Wilgeroth, Paige Kamer, and Blake Clouser. Becca Ruiz (1), Nelida Watson (1), Claire Fuchs (1) and Bella Pellet (1) all joined in on Bulldog scoring by the end of the first period horn.
All-American Leah Knowles made her presence known with a goal for Wingate at the beginning of the second quarter of play. Watson added another shot to give the Bulldogs a 12-0 lead before Grace Golatt drove to the goal by herself to get the Cavaliers on the board at the 7:46 mark.
Golatt would score the only goal for the Cavaliers for the remainder of the contest as the Bulldogs would delve into an eight-goal rally to finish out a 20-1 triumph.
Taryn Moreno would lead the Cavaliers with two groundballs while Kameryn Darrington would secure her 100th career groundball at the 8:07 mark of the second quarter.
The Moreno/Darrington duo would also account for two caused turnovers each in the contest.
Joining in career milestones would be Olivia Toomer in goal, who secured her 100th career save at the 12:45 mark of the first quarter.
The goalkeeper trio of Toomer, Addie Donalson, and Jordan Edwards would combine for 11 saves with Toomer saving nine.
UVA Wise returns to action on Saturday, April 8 when they face Coker. First draw is set for 12 p.m. at Carl Smith Stadium.
