WISE — UVA Wise jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as the Cavalier squad swiped a dominant 22-5 win over the Coker Cobras on Saturday afternoon at Cavalier Field.
The Cobras (1-10, 0-8 SAC) only could muster up 11 shots on goal in the contest, finding their way to the net three times in the first and two times in the fourth. Haley Morgan scored four of five goals for Coker, scoring all three first period goals and the final goal in the last nine seconds of the game.
Issie Brown initiated Cavalier scoring at the 12:46 mark of the first period. Logen Davis and Grace Golatt jumped in with a goal each to grab a 3-0 lead before the Cobras found a two-goal spark from Morgan to cut their way within one goal.
This would be the closest the Saints would get to the goal-happy Cavaliers (9-5, 5-3 SAC), with the Cavalier squad snagging five consecutive goals before Morgan would pace the Cobras with another goal to put the score at 8-3.
With less than two minutes of game time expired in the second quarter, Ashley Fisher drove in a goal to put the score at 10-3. From that point, the Cavaliers would score the next 12 goals and the Cobras would find themselves down by a 19-goal margin with less than four minutes to go in the final quarter. The Cobras would squeeze in two more goals before the final horn but the damage had been done as the 22-5 triumph secured the Cavaliers their fifth conference win of the season.
"The energy from the locker room to the field was great," UVA Wise head coach Meghan Dennehy said. "It was a nice team win. Now it's time to prepare for Tusculum."
Golatt led the Cavalier pack with a hat trick while Mallory Trimble, Anna Claire Watt, Kaila Lacey, Fisher, Allen, Brown, and Davis all added two goals each. Lauren Cole, Abby Stoffelen, Caitlyn Schultz, Taylor Willinghan, and Taylor Thompson each put in a goal each on the Cavalier scoreboard. Davis and Golatt each put up five points.
Trimble led the Cavaliers with five groundballs while Brown forced four caused turnovers. Kameryn Darrington and Brown swiped five draw controls each.
On the Cobra side, Morgan led with four goals and swiped 11 draw controls.
Up next, UVA Wise heads on the road to face Tusculum on Wednesday, April 12 for a 1 PM start.
