GAFFNEY, S.C./GREENEVILLE, TENN. —The shorthanded UVA Wise men's tennis team struggled against 37th-nationally ranked Limestone and 35th-nationally ranked Tusculum in conference play this weekend on the road, falling by scores of 6-1 and 7-0.
In Gaffney, Miguel De Rueda and Pierre Djaroueh battled tough against the Andre Zamoranol/Andres Cortes duo but eventually fell by a 7-6 score after a tiebreaker of 7-5 gave the Saints the win.
Gustavo Marangoni and Dominik Thuri-Nagy also put up a tough fight in No. 2 doubles, but couldn't hold off Ramiro Hernandez and Diego Arzaluz and fell by a 6-4 score.
Marangoni would find the only singles win for the Cavaliers as he defeated Thomas Jouanneau by a score of 8-7 (7-2) in the No. 5 spot.
Against Tusculum, UVA Wise only used four players and gave default wins to the Pioneers in the No. 3 doubles spot, the No. 2 singles spot, the No. 5 singles spot and the No. 6 singles spot. Giving the Pioneers a 3-0 automatic lead, the Cavaliers struggled to cut the deficit.
As a highlight, Marangoni and Fabian Segreda in the No. 2 doubles spot teamed up and pushed back at their Pioneer opponents, but fell by a 6-4 score.
Up next, UVA Wise will head back to the Jim & Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex in Wise to face Anderson on April 1 for a 1 PM first-serve.
