NEWBERRY, S.C. — The Wolves used an eight-goal first quarter to hold off the Cavaliers and snap a four-game winning streak by an 15-12 score at Setzler Field on Saturday, March 25.
Emma Jobs of Newberry (6-5, 3-1 SAC) scored the first two goals of the day unassisted in the first four minutes of play to get the Wolves on the board. Mallory Trimble made the first move for the Cavaliers (7-4, 3-2 SAC) with a goal at the 10:50 mark while Katie Allen added a goal of her own a minute later to tie the game at 2-2.
At the 8:57 mark of the first, the Wolves took control. Jenny Bates sparked a four-goal rally to catapult her squad to a 6-2 lead. Ashley Fisher would push another in before the end of the period, but Newberry would finish with the 8-3 lead.
After a low-scoring second quarter, the Wolves would maintain their high-scoring affair with three consecutive goals from Jobs (1) and Serena Elias (2) to put their lead at 13-4.
Fisher scored two of her career-high five goals in the third to push the Cavs back within seven goals.
At the 10:26 mark of the fourth, the Cavaliers exploded. Grace Golatt drove in their seventh goal of the day and led a six-goal charge to get within three, but time ran out and the Wolves held off a invigorated Cavalier group by a 15-12 score.
Fisher's five goals was followed by two goal performances each from Golatt and Abby Stoffelen. Additionally, Allen, Trimble, and Issie Brown each put in a goal.
Jobs led Newberry scoring with four goals while Cassell Richardson added three goals of her own.
Trimble collected four groundballs to lead her team, along with three caused turnovers. Kameryn Darrington also added three caused turnovers to the stat line.
Olivia Toomer snagged 11 saves in 48:26 minutes in goal. Jordan Edwards grabbed two saves in 11:34 minutes for the Cavaliers.
