WISE — An eight-goal, second period push from the score-hungry Cavaliers led the way for a 16-14 win over the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears at Carl Smith Stadium on Wednesday March 22.
The Cavalier win tied the overall series over the Bears, 3-3.
Lenoir-Rhyne (4-5, 3-1 SAC) drove their way to a 3-2 lead in the first period with the help of Kaitlyn Cavanaugh, Ellie Campbell, and Jolan Morey before UVA Wise quickly tied the game at 3 even from Katie Allen early on in the second.
From that point on, UVA Wise (7-3, 3-1 SAC) would never lose sight of the lead, driving past the Bears from an eight-goal second quarter sparked by a quick 13:33 mark goal from Caitlyn Schultz. After goals from Ashley Fisher (1), Allen (1), Stoffelen (2) and another Schultz shot, UVA Wise found a 10-5 lead by the end of first half of play.
After the Bears were held scoreless in the third, they started to come alive in the final period. Despite a four-goal performance from the Cavaliers, Lenoir-Rhyne crawled their way back within three goals with less than a minute to go.
The Bears scored four of the nine goals in the last two minutes, but the Cavalier margin was too large to overcome — finalizing a 16-14 win.
Today we saw full team effort," Head Coach Meghan Dennehy said. "It was fun to watch and see them all having fun because in the end that's the goal, to have fun and enjoy this game we all love."
Stoffelen led the Cavaliers with four goals and four points. Mallory Trimble snagged her 100th career draw control at the 6:44 mark of the second quarter, taking a total seven of them against Lenoir-Rhyne on the day.
UVA Wise successfully completed 15-of-16 clears while Lenoir-Rhyne went 16-for-21. The Cavaliers suffered 19 turnovers while the Bears suffered 20.
Up next, UVA Wise heads to Newberry on Saturday, March 25 for a 1 PM draw.
